Ferber method with pacifier

Has anyone done this?

My 3.5 month old does great with STTN and does not wake up and want a pacifier, but she only sleeps her swing to nap. I am going to transition her to her crib for all sleep, but would still like to keep the pacifier. Has anyone done Ferber with keeping it? If it ever becomes a problem I will eliminate it, but not ready to do that right now.

TIA!

Re: Ferber method with pacifier

  • We did Ferber with a pacifier.  When we went in there to reassure him, we did not necessarily replace the pacifier.  But we also sprinkled like 5 pacis in the crib so that he could find one when he needed it.  But there was a stage when he just needed that replaced and couldn't do it himself.  3.5 months seems a bit young for Ferber.  We didn't do it until he was 5 months old and it was VERY successful.  We didn't get rid of his paci until he was 2 years old.

Thanks! I really just want to transition her to mostly sleep in her crib bc I can tell she is dependent on her swing. She naps and sleeps well throughout the day/night, but I'm sure I won't implement this actual method until 4 months if transitioning from the swing isn't very successful.

  • We did Ferber with a pacifier, but with a 10 month old.

3.5 months seems way too young to me...sorry...

Thank you! I'm not actually doing the method, but just want to be educated on it so I don't mess her up while transitioning her from swing to crib.

  • Technically Ferber doesn't advise doing it with the pacifier because you will just have to do the method again when you are ready to drop the pacifier.  But if you are fine with that then go for it.

Ferber worked really well for us.  Neither of my boys were into pacifiers so that wasn't an issue for us.  But both were Ferbered around 3 months.  With DS1 it took 3 nights and he slept w/o crying on the 4th night.  With DS2 it worked by the 3rd night w/o crying.  Such a relief!  GL!

  • We transitioned from swing to crib for naps around that time as well.  He started doing REALLY short naps in the crib but they eventually got longer.  We didn't do ferber for this though.  We did ferber at 6 months with no paci.  4 months seems really young for ferber to me though I know a few that have done it.  I also know people that tried ferber at 4 months and it was an awful failure.  When they did it at 6 months it went much better.  Not sure if it was just their kid wasn't ready or that is too young, but it seems too young for me.  Just my opinion though.

in ferber if you read the book I think it addresses paci if you want to keep it

How was your transition to the crib? I tried doing it and it has been unsuccessful, so this I why I felt the need to be educated by Ferber.
