Two Under 2

Nap/night time routines

I just gave birth Saturday and have a 19th month old at home. Friday is my first day with both of them alone and Im curious to see what you all do for nap/night time routine. Do you plan it around the baby or keep your schedule the same for your under 2? I guess Ill have to wait and see what Friday brings and see what I can do I just worry about him crying to eat when its her rock/night time and who I cater to first. Im probably getting anxious about the whole thing when I dont need to but knew you girls would listen!

Re: Nap/night time routines

  • I was worried about the same thing and am only a few weeks into being alone with both girls.

I pretty much anticipate DD1's nap about 45 minutes ahead of time and change / feed DD2.  She currently falls asleep while BFing so I'll transfer her to the swing and cross my fingers that she stays asleep long enough for me to get DD1 down at least close to her nap time.  DD1's naps have to slide a little sometimes but so far it hasn't been a problem.

I only had one day where they "worked against me".  I tried to get DD1 down for a nap but DD2 started crying when ever I attempted; thus keeping DD1 from going to sleep.  So I took them on a long walk (DD1 in stroller and DD2 in Ergo).  DD1 fell asleep on our walk so I was going to put her in the garage but as soon as we were home (in front of neighbor's house) DD2 started crying and woke up DD1.  GRRRR!    Luckily DD1 wasn't really cranky and our day was just fine with only 1 ten minute nap.  :)

I can't help you with bedtime because DH is home during that time.

  • My boys were 15 months apart and for the most part I kept DS1 on his same nap/night time schedule. If both needed me I learned very quickly to assess the situation and sometimes had to let one cry while I took care of the other one. I pretty much knew through when DS2 needed to eat b/c I fed him on a 3 hour schedule during the day. I timed his bedtime to be before DS1's. And while I did DS2s bedtime around 615-630, DS1 would play in the nursery or in his room. After DS2 went down I did DS1's bedtime routine.
