Intro and Baby wearing question

Hi, I'm new to this board, but I've been lurking and I'm liking what I see! my DS is 6 months old tomorrow, and I'm starting to see so much personality that I feel like we're getting ready to "parent" and not just provide what he needs.

I have a question about baby wearing.DS was EBF until last week and now we're intriducing solids (as purees but we're sort of letting him play like BLW). We go out a lot for dinner, and we like to run around town on the weekends, and DS is reaching for our food at dinner in restaurants. I want to be able to wear him in town and at dinner as sort of a distraction from our food at least (he screams if we don't share), but he HATES the moby wrap. He screams when i put him in it, but I REALLY want to nurse him in it and wear him at dinner and when we're out walking around.

How can I get him to be OK with the Moby? Any particular ways of wearing that seem to work better with your LOs? I have such a hard time getting my Moby on correctly and loose enough to put him in, and it always turns into a disaster. Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

Re: Intro and Baby wearing question

  • Honestly, as he becomes more interested in solids, he probably will just want to participate with you during your meal!  I would just sit him in a highchair at your table, and always travel with foods (and toys!) that he can eat in case the restaurant offerings aren't suitable.  As for the moby, a lot of mamas find that it just isn't comfortable as baby becomes bigger.  We stopped using it around 3 or 4 months. If you still want to nurse/BW, I would recommend trying something different, like an Ergo or a ring sling, or even a mei tai.  These can all be used into toddlerhood, and will give you a variety of carries you can use.

  • Thanks ladies. I'm now looking for a different sling. There are so many to choose from I feel lost. What are your favorites and which ones work best for nursing? DS weighs 20 lbs, so he's a pretty big boy. I found this site https://www.theslingstation.com/index.html and it seems to have every option available, but I don't know how the prices are compared to other places.

Have you considered other ways of distracting him at the dinner table?  Can you give him toys or books.  He may find it too confining to be in a carrier facing you while you're sitting still.  Perhaps he'll be happier sitting separately and observing everything that's going on.

First you have to be okay with it.  Are you confident and calm when using the carrier & putting him in it?  Also, it often helps to walk, bounce or rock.

Any particular ways of wearing that seem to work better with your LOs?

It depends on the baby.  Try mimicking the way that you carry him in-arms.  Use the same position that you normally use to calm him down.

It's unlikely that it's wrapped it too tightly.  What is it that makes you feel that it's too tight?  Do you have pictures you can share?  The beauty of a stretchy wrap is that you can stretch it to put your LO in.
