Re: GTKY Survey - entertain me :)

  • 1. Commute time?About 60 minutes total.  Maybe less.  And that includes a stop to drop off/pick up the kid at daycare.

    2. If you could easily move your immediate family to another city or state, would you go, and where would you go? We did it pre-kid and we'll do it again.  The where will depend on careers.  I would like to go back to California but in all likelihood we'll end up in D.C..

    3. What?s your favorite board game? I haven't met one I don't like.

    4. What?s your philosophy on buying or making things for baby before baby is born and/or conceived? Before the baby is conceived I think sets up expectation.  A special item - fine.  But buying lots of stuff is a bit too much, IMO.  Prior to birth - that's all good.

    5. If you won 10 million dollars what?s one ridiculously expensive purely FUN thing you would do or buy? I think paying off all bills would be outrageously fun! Stick out tongue But since that isn't what you meant....I would buy K and I our favorite cars.

    6. When was the last time you played sardines? What's sardines?

    7. You just won free plane tickets for you and immediate family to anywhere. You have to depart right now. Where are you going? Prague.  Wait, it's probably snowing in Prague.  I don't care. I wasn't there long enough and really want to go back.

  • 1. Approximately how many minutes a day do you spend traveling to or from work? about 30 minutes total
    2. If you could easily move your immediate family to another city or state, would you go, and where would you go? yes, we'd move to Wakefield, Mass (boston suburb)
    3. What?s your favorite board game? Cranium - LOVE that game
    4. What?s your philosophy on buying or making things for baby before baby is born and/or conceived? I don't have one.  We did it but only a little.  We even bought a little teddy bear with the boy name that we love(d) soooo much.  I dont regret it, though it will probably never be put to use.
    5. If you won 10 million dollars what?s one ridiculously expensive purely FUN thing you would do or buy? I'd buy a horse for sure - well, maybe more like a horse farm and take in a bunch of rescue horses.
    6. When was the last time you played sardines? umm, never? what is this sardines you speak of?
    7. You just won free plane tickets for you and immediate family to anywhere.  You have to depart right now.  Where are you going? Sedona, AZ.

  • You guys don't know the game sardines??  I just attempted to use Wikipedia to explain, but they are blacked out today.  What a miserable world it will be if SOPA passes.  ;)

Sardines is a game like hide and seek, only one person hides and the rest of the players seek.  When each person finds the hider they have to join the hider in that hiding spot.  The last person to find the hiding spot is the next hider.

  • 1. Approximately how many minutes a day do you spend traveling to or from work? 1.5-each way including drop off/pick up. On days I don't pick up, 1 hr (I always drop off.)
    2. If you could easily move your immediate family to another city or state, would you go, and where would you go? YES. The problem is we have no idea where. We aren't interested in moving to where our parents live (southern states), want someplace that is gay friendly, is not too rural, cost of living is relatively low/affordable, and we can cut our commute down (oh, what I could do with those 3 hrs/day.) Does this place exist?
    3. What?s your favorite board game? Scrabble
    4. What?s your philosophy on buying or making things for baby before baby is born and/or conceived? I was adamant that we not purchase anything before TTC, but we went on vacation and fell in love with a lamp and bought it. It still sits in the boys room. But we did buy everything before the kids were born.
    5. If you won 10 million dollars what?s one ridiculously expensive purely FUN thing you would do or buy? Travel abroad. ETA: I am amending this to add a house closer in to the city. 4 bedrooms (Master, one for each kid, and a guest) plus an office for L. Oh, and money to decorate it top to bottom.
    6. When was the last time you played sardines? Huh? What is that?
    7. You just won free plane tickets for you and immediate family to anywhere.  You have to depart right now.  Where are you going? Disney. I can't wait to take the kids and it is warm there right now and I am cold. ;) And we could hang out with close friends who live nearby.

  • 1. Approximately how many minutes a day do you spend traveling to or from work?
Almost 2 hours (total, 1 each way).  And I kind of hate it.  But apparently not quite enough to get us together to move closer to work.  (DW also commutes about 2 hours, and in theory we could move and shorten both.)

    2. If you could easily move your immediate family to another city or state, would you go, and where would you go?
I've never really spent much time in either, but I decided a few months ago that we should move to either Hartford, CT or Northampton, MA.  I would add Providence if RI ever got it's gay marriage act in order.  DW thinks I'm a bit crazy.

    3. What?s your favorite board game?
    Pictionary

    4. What?s your philosophy on buying or making things for baby before baby is born and/or conceived?
We have a no buying/making policy right now.  It feels jinxy.

    5. If you won 10 million dollars what?s one ridiculously expensive purely FUN thing you would do or buy?
I'm torn between buying a huge Victorian house and going on a round the world National Geographic trip.

    6. When was the last time you played sardines?
You guys are missing out.  We (a group of 8 pre-kid adults) turned all the lights off and played in VT last weekend.  It was so childish and yet ridiculously fun.

    7. You just won free plane tickets for you and immediate family to anywhere.  You have to depart right now.  Where are you going?
I'll be swimming with some dolphins off the coast of Honduras tomorrow.  Adios, winter.

  • 1. Approximately how many minutes a day do you spend traveling to or from work? about 40 minutes, give or take. daycare literally around the corner from our house, so other than the time spent inside it doesn't add any time to my trip to drop off/pick up my boy.
    2. If you could easily move your immediate family to another city or state, would you go, and where would you go? like, my whole immediate family, like parents and siblings? yes, I probably would. there are a few places I would consider. if not, then no, probably not at this point.
    3. What?s your favorite board game? probably apples to apples, I guess. hand and foot is my favorite game (cards).
    4. What?s your philosophy on buying or making things for baby before baby is born and/or conceived? I don't know. I don't think I really have a philosophy on it. I guess I think that it's okay to buy a few things before you conceive, and it's necessary to buy at least some things for the baby before it's born.
    5. If you won 10 million dollars what?s one ridiculously expensive purely FUN thing you would do or buy? camera equipment. are you surprised? I have a list...
    6. When was the last time you played sardines? I hadn't ever heard of it either before this post. how funny!

  • 1. Approximately how many minutes a day do you spend traveling to or from work?
25-30, depending on my wait for the train.
    2. If you could easily move your immediate family to another city or state, would you go, and where would you go?
Portland! Oh wait, that's happening right now! :)
    3. What?s your favorite board game?
Scrabble. Or Trivial Pursuit. No, Scrabble. Also love Blokus, but am not good at it.
    4. What?s your philosophy on buying or making things for baby before baby is born and/or conceived?
I am not superstitious. What happens is biology and nothing else. [ETA that we only bought one thing - an All Blacks onesie in NZ - before the BFP. But just for practical reasons - we didn't need it, or have a place to store it.]
    5. If you won 10 million dollars what?s one ridiculously expensive purely FUN thing you would do or buy?
I would take my immediate family on a round-the-world cruise.
    6. When was the last time you played sardines?
    Never?
    7. You just won free plane tickets for you and immediate family to anywhere.  You have to depart right now.  Where are you going?

    Scrabble!

    4. What?s your philosophy on buying or making things for baby before baby is born and/or conceived?

I can't even entertain this because my wife is so rooted in Minnesota there's no way we're ever going anywhere.

Trivial Pursuit. Any kind, any year, any time.

    4. What?s your philosophy on buying or making things for baby before baby is born and/or conceived?
Definitely before they are born since life will be much busier once baby is here...but I only bought 1 or 2 very special, one of a kind items before baby was conceived. No sense in taking up storage space for longer than 9 months.

    5. If you won 10 million dollars what?s one ridiculously expensive purely FUN thing you would do or buy?
    A trip to Antarctica.

    3. What?s your favorite board game? Cranium

    4. What?s your philosophy on buying or making things for baby before baby is born and/or conceived? I have yet to buy anything for a baby. My friend was cleaning out her house so she gave me a bunch of baby stuff so I have that. I just don't want to buy anything and then not get pregnant.

  • 1. Approximately how many minutes a day do you spend traveling to or from work? I spend about 30 minutes heading in and 45 heading home.
    2. If you could easily move your immediate family to another city or state, would you go, and where would you go? If Kel was on-board, I might be into moving either to California or Tennessee--but she is rooted here.
    3. What?s your favorite board game? Maybe Apples to Apples or Crainium or Trivial Pursuit or... (I like board games)
    4. What?s your philosophy on buying or making things for baby before baby is born and/or conceived? I bought Kel one special outfit right before we tried for Eli. Beyond that, we waited until we were safely into the 2nd tri before buying anything. I was comfortable at that time--Kel was still nervous that it was bad voodoo.
    5. If you won 10 million dollars what?s one ridiculously expensive purely FUN thing you would do or buy? Your shopping list sounds very similar to ours, if you add in a strong desire to be within daytrip distance of the ocean.  :)   And "low cost of living" just means relative to the insane NYC cost of living....  Sometimes we look at craigslist ads in other cities and just drool.

    2. If you could easily move your immediate family to another city or state, would you go, and where would you go? We already tried moving to California and it didn't work for us.  I love Massachusetts.  I'd consider moving to a town closer to work if I could afford the houses I'd want there.

    3. What?s your favorite board game? Taboo?  Trivial Pursuit?

    4. What?s your philosophy on buying or making things for baby before baby is born and/or conceived? I don't want to buy anything before we conceive.  I'm not necessarily superstitious but I just think how sad it would make me to figure out what to do with those things if I eventually had to accept that I couldn't have a child.  We do have several baby items (exersaucer, Beaba Babycook, etc) that my SIL gave us when she was cleaning out her attic.  And I have a baby t-shirt from my dad's alma mater that I'm pretty sure he bought when my sister was born in 1976.  I found it when going through storage and I tucked it away for the future.

    5. If you won 10 million dollars what?s one ridiculously expensive purely FUN thing you would do or buy? The chef's tasting menu for my wife and me at Menton.  Since this is a fantasy, I would also be not trying to TTC so I could enjoy the wine pairings.

Oh yes, I understand the long time for the short distance..  mine is a bit farther in distance now (but same length in time), but for the past 3 years it was an hour per way for less than 10 miles.   I just checked and DW's hour commute is 6 miles.

ALSO, I see that you had your IUI today???  Fingers crossed for you!!!  Did you end up getting monitoring to check which side ovulated?

Sadly, I think that my best commuting option in terms of time would be driving.  I've never tried it but I think I could do it in 45 minutes.  However, I cannot afford to pay $20/day to park the car!  Plus I'd lose my precious reading time.  I've explored my three public transit options and they all suck -- the one I do now just sucks the least. :)

Thanks for the crossed fingers!  We didn't end up doing monitoring.  The RE was pretty confident that my tube isn't blocked -- I was somewhat misinformed/confused about what had actually happened during the HSG (dye did go into my right tube, but did not spill out the end...could still indicate a blockage but she thinks the dye just didn't make it that far).  By the time I had talked to her and the financial person in her office regarding insurance coverage, it was getting pretty close to O and we were going to have to skip the cycle if we didn't do it with the midwives.  If the RE had said "don't bother," I would have skipped the cycle, but she really felt that doing this last IUI with the midwives was the right thing to do.  They also had our last vial of sperm so now we don't have to figure out how to transport it to the RE's office.

I had a great conversation with the midwife I've seen the most of about our decisions and she was super supportive and encouraging...maybe she's just a good faker but I honestly felt like she genuinely wants me to get pregnant.  She's been great and it makes me really happy that we started this process the way we did, even if it doesn't end up working out, but I also feel good about our decision to go RE from here on out.  And I get to go back to the same midwives for pre-natal care when I get pregnant, which I'm looking forward to.  Especially since they are opening a new office less than 2 miles from my house in March!

  • 1. Approximately how many minutes a day do you spend traveling to or from work?90 minuntes one way when I have to drop the baby off at my borhter's house. 15/20 on the days I do not...man I need a closer babysitter!
    2. If you could easily move your immediate family to another city or state, would you go, and where would you go? Toss up for us. We would both love Key West BUT a bit more practical would be somewhere in WI.
    3. What?s your favorite board game? Pretty much any...we are HUGE board game fanatics.
    4. What?s your philosophy on buying or making things for baby before baby is born and/or conceived? Before conception no, before birth only after the 20 week u/s.
    5. If you won 10 million dollars what?s one ridiculously expensive purely FUN thing you would do or buy? I am too practical for this question lol. I would honestly say our dream house but even then that is not ridiculously expensive (like 150,000) and it would probably only be "fun" to us lol. Oh but I could book a several week cruise for the family that would be AWESOME.
    6. When was the last time you played sardines? Never
    7. You just won free plane tickets for you and immediate family to anywhere.  You have to depart right now.  Where are you going? Someplace warm that we have never been!

Oo, I like apples to apples.  What is hand and foot?

it's AWESOME! I've heard that it's kind of like a simplified Canasta, but I've never played that so I can't really say. it uses multiple decks all shuffled together, and each person starts out with both a hand and a foot, you play with your hand and set aside your foot without looking at it (it will become your hand later when you get rid of that). you draw from a pile and lay down melds of 3+ cards that you can add to to try to make 7-card books, red/clean/natural (no wilds) and black/dirty/wild of all the same values, so like a book of 8s or a book of queens or whatever. the goal is to get rid of all your cards from both your hand and your foot to go out first with as many books as you can to get the most points over the course of 4 rounds. there are lots of other rules and they do vary slightly, so it gets a little complex trying to explain it. we have a bag of our hand and foot cards, we play often enough that we don't bother to separate the decks, haha!

haha, yeah, it seems pretty rare! I don't know of many people besides my sister and my wife's family that play (or have even heard of it), other than a friend in Michigan and some friends here that we've taught to play.

    1. Approximately how many minutes a day do you spend traveling to or from work? Now? 2--if I stop to pee before making his bottle. ;)
    2. If you could easily move your immediate family to another city or state, would you go, and where would you go? Never been but I like the idea of San Fran (if we won the lottery...)
    3. What?s your favorite board game? currently--Cranium Party Playoff!
    4. What?s your philosophy on buying or making things for baby before baby is born and/or conceived? My philosophy? Be okay if it doesn't work out. Making things? better do it before--no time after. Anything we did we tried not to tie to a specific child.
    5. If you won 10 million dollars what?s one ridiculously expensive purely FUN thing you would do or buy? Rent a cruise ship & take all my friends and family
    6. When was the last time you played sardines? years ago... but thanks for the reminder!
    7. You just won free plane tickets for you and immediate family to anywhere.  You have to depart right now.  Where are you going? Greece!  It's a different answer for me, but it feels right right now!
