Next friday i'll be 12 weeks and i'm going to get a 3D u/s. The doctor is going to tell me 80% if it's a boy or a girl. Of course my first concern is that he tells me the baby is in perfect health but I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!
Wow! I'm soooo jelly! That's pretty cool. I'm guessing your doc does the 3D in their office? We had to go to a special place and pay for it ourselves, so we get to wait like the other commoners, LOL.
Isn't it "the way it hangs" at this point? I mean it's there but you have to judge from the angle of it?? I thought I remembered reading about that as an early way to guess the sex of a baby. Of course there is more room for error. 80% seems a little high to me still...
wow guys really?? Is it really unheard of? I know with my last one they said no way, but my dr said with the level 2 3D scan at 12 weeks they look at a certain bone, not the genitals to figure it out. I assume that is what they are doing with her.
you do realize at 12 weeks that the baby is way too young to tell right? that this can be inaccurate? betweeen 12-16 weeks the genitals of a baby are so similar- I would be very very cautious.
I don't know about finding out the sex earlier but 3d ultrasounds freak me out. The doctor would switch back and forth with our last pregnancy and I never wanted to see that much detail, especially that early on. I'm ok with waiting to see who's nose it has until it's an outside baby.

My cousin's wife is a ultra sound tech. She has always found out very early what she is having. Their first child is a boy and their second is a girl- with another boy on the way. When she was pregnant with the girl they told everyone that they were having a boy. Well about 4 weeks later they had to tell everyone actually it is a girl. So be prepared that they can be wrong. I am not sure how far along she was but probably 13 weeks or so when she thought she was having another boy.

I think it is a higher rate than 50% because they can see the way the pelvis is forming at a 12 week level II scan. Larger pelvic bones usually indicate boys, etc. So maybe 60-70% accuracy. I've had several AMA friends that have had them done at 12 weeks and the preliminary guesses were all right but of course nothing is as accurate as an anatomy scan at 16+ weeks.
I'm also having my NT scan next week at 13 weeks to check on a possible pregnancy complication and they said they might be able to give me a pretty good guess but don't go out and buy any clothes yet.

Sounds like a great scheme on the part of the doctor. The patient pays OOP and if they are wrong, they say it's an 80% chance.
haha this is totally what my DH would say!!!
if she wants to get excited let her! personally I wouldn't want to know until the typical 20th week anyways- just so they are as sure as they can be- and a co workers friend was told it was a boy and turned out when the baby was born (after buying all boy things) it was a girl...Dr was wrong.

Wow, some people are being pretty harsh. I do agree it's early but I'd still be excited and just know it's not for sure, which you are completely aware of. I know a friend who just found out at 12 weeks also with the same warning to not max out their CC shopping.Have fun at your appt!! I can't wait to see/hear LO's heartbeat next week at our 12 week!
I am having a 3d/4d ultrasound too and they said they couldn't tell me that early . Plus it was smarter to wait to have it for the best picture possibilities.

This is a site I found that explains "the angle of the dangle" of the genital tubercle and how the angle can be used to guess the sex at 12 weeks.
I still think the dr. is a little sure of himself to give an 80% accuracy rating.

1). I have my 12 week NT scan tomorrow and they guess w/ 80% accuracy too.
2). I won't put much weight into the guess (although fun) because of this link...
