tylenol pm

I have been sleeping awful lately...like 2 hours a night.  All I do is toss and turn and whenever I wake up to pee (which is like 3-4 times a night) I am AWAKE! I know tylenol is safe to take but has anyone asked their OB about tylenol pm?  I used it occasionally before getting pregnant and it helped a ton usually so I really want to try it tonight but wanted to make sure its safe...anyone know for sure?

Re: tylenol pm

  • My OB told me any tylenol products are good.  If in doubt ask your dr.

  • My OB told me that although regular Tylenol is safe, the ingredient that makes it "PM" is not.  She suggested Benadryl to help me sleep.
  • The PM part is Benadryl which is safe. I just take benadryl because it is cheaper (the generic kind) and I usually don't need the pain relief of tylenol.  Hope you get some sleep.

The PM part is Benadryl (Diphenhydramine HCl) though. Odd.

Well, that makes me wonder a bit about the advice I got.  Maybe something was just lost in translation from doctor to nurse to me.

  • This is from the guide my doctor gave me:

Tylenol, Extra Strength Tylenol, or any product that Tylenol makes (Tylenol PM, Tylenol Cold and Sinus, etc.) is safe.  Avoid any medicines containing aspiring or anti-inflammatory medicines.

    Yes

    Straight from Tylenol.com

What are the main ingredients in TYLENOL? PM?
Each gelcap/geltab/caplet of TYLENOL? PM contains 500 mg of the pain reliever, acetaminophen, and 25 mg of the sleep aid, diphenhydramine HCl.

Benadryl is diphenhydramine HCL; therefore, if Benadryl is safe, Tylenol PM is safe.

  • Like others have said, Tylenol PM is simply a Tylenol with a Benadryl combined into it.  It's even the same dosage as one Benadryl.  Also like a PP said, I generally don't need the pain relief part so just take one Benadryl each night.  With my first pregnancy I took a Tylenol PM every night until near the end, when I figured out that the PM part was just Benadryl.  Then I switched to that.

  • I'm glad to read this! I assumed it was safe, since it was a Tylenol product. I've been taking 2 pills the last few nights because I have the hardest time falling asleep. My body always decides at bedtime that it wants to start burping nonstop! but the TPM knocks me out all night long :)
  • i used to take the tylenol simply sleep ...the only ingredient is benedryl... i asked my dr about it specifically and she said it was fine.
