U/S v Sonogram

What is the difference between a sonogram, a doppler, an abdominal u/s, and a transvaginal. I have only had abdominal u/s. I was able to see the baby via ab u/s which apparently means I am progressing well but the transvaginal is supposedly more detailed. What is the difference?

Re: U/S v Sonogram

  • A sonogram is the image produced by the ultrasound.  A transvaginal ultrasound shows a little more detail, especially in the early stages of a pregnancy.  I had both an abdominal and a transvaginal ultrasound last week (10w5d).   The pictures taken transvaginally were a little clearer than the abdominal ones.  I didn't notice a huge difference in the images, but the tech said she could see more using the transvaginal probe, and she could get a more accurate reading of the heart rate.  A fetal doppler is a device that uses ultrasound technology to detect and measure the heart rate.

  • Thanks, I don't know why but I get super confused when I try to decipher it on the internet so I know I sound kinda dumb on the boards, but the support helps.
