Lurker--but has anyone left a NICE guy?

Just curious...does anyone have any tips to share on how to keep things amicable when leaving a nice guy?  I very fortunately don't have to worry about any abuse issues when I bring this on him, but I have a lot of guilt over this decision, and was wondering how to begin to navigate this possible change.

Am I naive in thinking that things could even BE amicable if I leave him?

  • I am newly single. On Christmas, I split up with my fiance that I have been with for seven years. We have a 5 month old son. I love him very much, and in so many ways, he is a great guy. Unfortunately, he has a drug addiction. He has been clean most of our relationship, but he always ends up slipping up. Sometimes it is years, sometimes only months. He slipped up at Christmastime (stress of losing his father recently and no work in the winter), and he burned quite a few bridges, including my family members. He is a nice guy. He is a good father. He went to rehab and is clean right now. But I can't take the chances anymore with a baby around. He has never been abusive in any way. He just makes terrible decisions sometimes with terrible consequences. The hardest thing right now is not getting along with him ... we get along just fine. The hardest thing is watching him struggle with no money, no real place to live, depressed over losing his family. I let him see LO daily, and he has stayed over several times (on the couch) when he had no place else to stay. However, the relationship has to be over. We are both mourning the loss of our plans, hopes, dreams together. Sometimes I just wish he really was an ass_hole.

  • Thank you so much for the insight!  Obviously, this is not something I am going to take lightly and I will mull it over for quite awhile.  Like you said, tif, we are just not right for each other but he still is a fantastic person, and he doesn't deserve to get hurt by a snap decision. I need to figure out what to do.
