Cloth Diapering

Front loaders

Right now we are using a diaper service for our 4.5 month old. Now that we know we love cloth, I'd like to save money and wash our own.

I hear it can be challenging getting them clean in a front loader due to less water. Has anyone had success with theirs? If so, what's your routine and how long does it take to do a load? Would you say it's manageable for a working mom?

Thanks!

Re: Front loaders

  • We have an HE front loader. I have never had any trouble getting them clean. I do a "speed wash" on cold (it's about 37 min or something) Then I do a "whites" wash (hot) which is uauslly about an hour but I make it longer if I accidentally go a 3rd day without washing. And then I do a rinse. Sooo...

    cold speed wash

    hot, long wash

    extra rinse

  • I haven't had problems (well, besides yeast, but that's a whole different ball game).

I do a cold cycle. Then I do a hot cycle with detergent, followed by another cold cycle. It takes about 1 1/2 hours to do if I do the cycles one right after the other.

We have enough diapers to wash every 3 (or probably 4), but I generally wash every other day.  If I did them every 4 days, the washer would be stuffed. Then I probably would have trouble getting them clean.

  • I've never had a problem.  My machine doesn't let me tailor settings very much, so this is what I do: I run a cold/cold delicate cycle, no detergent, no spin.  Then I run a heavy power wash on hot/cold, extra cold rinse, with detergent (I use Tide powder).  The whole thing takes about an hour and a half.  I wash every other day.  I work FT and it's super easy.
  • Thanks so much for the replies. I think I'll give it a shot. Doesn't sound too difficult.
