Hi ladies,
I just had a question for you. I went to my 12 week appointment last week and the NP felt my uterus and said that it felt larger than normal for 12 weeks. She also told me that it had already moved up into my abdomen... I guess 12 weeks is early for that?
I am positive about when I conceived bc I used an OPK... it was 16 days after LMP. My dates should be pretty much right on.
She then asked if twins run in my family (they don't). I have not had any ultrasounds yet and I'm kind of worried. Could something be wrong or does this sound like twins?? Did this happen to any of you?
Thanks in advance.
Re: POSSIBLY twins???
I believe you will find that most of us had ultrasounds that were our first inkling we were carrying multiples. I found out at my dating ultrasound at 7 weeks with mine and would have had no idea until they saw two heartbeats on the monitor. There is a lot of variation in size ( I was small and not showing for a while, but I had pretty bad morning sickness until 19 wks and these are my first) and symptoms. Most of the things that people quote as "how I should have known it was twins when..." you can find lots of singleton pregnancies that have the same complaint.
So I hate to say it, but your only true sign is an ultrasound. Are you having one soon? If they are really concerned about it possibly being twins, they should do an ultrasound. And if you don't have one scheduled, you should ask about getting one.
H&H 9 months to you either way.
An OPK is good at letting you know when you're body is having an LH surge, but it can't really pinpoint ovulation. My last cycle, my body geared up to O more than once, for example.
If you're having twins, at 12 weeks your uterus would measure a bit larger, but I don't think by much. For example, I hadn't had an u/s at 12 weeks and my doctor never noticed that I seemed to be measuring larger at my appt. I had one at 14- which was an emergency u/s because I was bleeding.
Are you scheduled for a 20 week u/s only? Have you seen a doctor yet, or only an NP? I would call and speak to your doctor and voice your concerns.
Oh, and I doubt something is "wrong." You just may show early, or it could be multiples.
If they suspect multiples, it's irresponsible of them to not schedule you for an u/s, IMO. I understand that some practices (like my own), don't do an early u/s as a matter of routine. But if they have a suspicion, they should schedule an early one.
Because I have a history (even though mine are only ID), my doctor told me from now on I'll be getting early u/s on my pregnancies, even though that's not standard for all her patients.
Thank you and no I have not met my doctor yet. I will meet her on February 3rd. I plan on telling her why I got an elective u/s.
I would call your drs office and see if they could do an u/s at the drs appt. It would be really odd to not have one if they suspect twins. Even if the NP said not until 19 weeks I might just call and double check, say your confused or forgot what she said if you don't want to sound like you're questioning her. It would be cheaper then elective and the dr would automatically have the record of it.
If she suspected twins she should've done an ultrasound to to thorough and safe. I will call back and request on.
Good luck to you.
I agree. I would strongly push for an u/s sooner than later. If you are carrying twins it's important to determine the chorinicity (number of placentas) early on because it's difficult to determine the further you get. Also mo/di and mo/mo twins need more frequent u/s starting at 16 weeks. I've read that it is ACOG recommends a first trimester u/s for confirmation, dating purposes and to determine multiple gestations.

I echo the others. What is your NP thinking?!?
Heck, I ended up with insulin dependent GD at 12w from the twins....
