Upstate NY Babies

Funny/embarrassing walmart story.

I like to keep HPTs in the house.. We only use condoms.. and I just got my first AF after Natalie last month so my cycles aren't quite regular yet (I guess). AF was due yesterday so I used my last $ tree test, which was BFN, yesterday.

Today I ran into walmart to buy zyrtec for Eve and happened across the 88 cent pg tests there.. so I picked up a couple, along with some other medicines.

I decide to go through an express line where the cashier was a big young black guy.. He was probably 400ish lbs.. I figured he was probably the LEAST likely person in the world to comment on my pregnancy tests.

So he says to me "Can I ask you something? Do these tests really work?" I said yes..and then for some reason I felt the need to qualify it with "well, I usually use the dollar tree ones" And he was like "Oh really? I thought they were always like $13 or $14 a test". I debated on going into the details of how you had to pee in cup and use a dropper, vs POAS.. but I decided to just skip it and run out of there as quickly as I could..

Re: Funny/embarrassing walmart story.

  • Haha, I love those tests!  I bought like 10 of them when I was pregnant with ds and peed on them all.  I even did one at work on my lunch because I just loved seeing it turn positive.
  • How random.  At least he was friendly LOL.  I buy them occasionally just because I am paranoid and I am always worried someone will comment on it because I always have both kids with me.  Thankfully, nothing so far.

  • Oh goodness, I'm always paranoid that someone is going to strike up a conversation about them when I buy them. I went to the $ store the other day to pick some up for the same reason as you, and I couldn't find them. I had to ask someone where they were, and they told me you had to ask for them at the register.  So I ask for five at the register, and the woman next to me in line shot me a look. Fun!
  • This is pretty funny.  I think everyone must feel uncomfortable buying pregnancy tests and condoms.  My good friends actually had a funny story from when they found out they were pg with their DD.  They had sort of an in the moment decision to go for it one time and then decided afterwards that they would actually wait a little bit longer to ttc.  So a few weeks later when her AF hadn't showed up they went to the store to buy a pg test and condoms,  They felt so weird since those were the only two items they had so her DH grabbed a yoohoo (so random).  They still laugh about how they never needed those condoms afterall, but her DH claims the yoohoo was amazing!
  • When I went off BCPs for the first time, I was at the dollar tree and bought 3 tests. The checkout girl was like "You need 3 of them? Won't 1 give you an answer?" I just laughed and was like "well, you never know-I might need to take a few"
  • haha! I can totally relate with looking at the cashiers before I get into line.  Hoping that I can find someone that won't make a comment about my purchases.  Especially with something like HPT's.

That's funny.  It totally reminds me of the odd product placement I saw at Tops last year.  On the shelf with the condoms, they had a little hanger with giftcards to Motherhood Maternity.  Really?

  • Haha I always feel funny about buying them. I used to work in a grocery store and while I didn't necessarily judge people for buying HPTs, I tried to figure out what they wanted it to say, so I know it is something people must think about.

  • LOL Walmart cashiers always seem to have to comment on purchases. One time when DH and I were newly married I went to buy the bulk box of condoms. I went to a line with a woman who must have been in her 40s thinking she would be mature enough to not say anything. Nope. First comment "Wow! That is one BIG box!!!"  Ugh!
