PTing question (a bit long)

DS just turned 2 and all of a sudden he has shown interest in the potty. We have had a little potty in the bathroom for months just for him to see it but recently he has been telling us after he goes in his diaper, which I know is the first step in potty training.  I was not at all expecting to start PTing now, I was planning on waiting until at least the summer.  so here is my predicitment:

he constantly has been asking to go on the potty, like every 15 minutes, and I put him on and he doesn't do anything.  Do I continue to put him on teh potty(keep in mind he is still in diapers and its winter time so pants etc) or discourage it by saying no you aren't going potty now....If he actually went on the potty, I would obviously continue putting him on, but he sits on it for a minute or so and says "all done".  any advice from those who have been there is welcomed...thanks so much! If he is really ready to PT I will do it but I feel he is really young

Re: PTing question (a bit long)

  • I am no expert but when I read the three day potty training PDF I was shocked when they said the best window is when little ones are UNDER 22 months. We waited till much later with mixed success....

  • I'm no PTing expert but since he is (1) showing knowledge of when he goes pee pee in his diaper (able to sense biological cues) and (2) is interested in sitting on the potty, I would at least give PTing a try.

If I were in your shoes, I would load him up with fluids so he's more likely to need to pee and then try to make him sit on the potty longer. For DD, I would sit in the bathroom with her and read her books, feed her animal crackers, and let her watch TV from the potty. We sometimes sat there for 15-20 minutes. Then, if she went pee pee, there was lots of cheering, stickers, etc. We also put her in these Gerber training pants. She also didn't wear pants or shorts around the house so it was easier to just get the underwear off. Within 2 days, she seemed to get the concept. I'm not saying that she was PTed in two days but she started to understand the connection and then we took it from there.

As a side note, I've heard that people nowadays PT later because we have the luxury of disposable diapers but that in the past, parents PTed earlier since it meant they didn't have to wash cloth diapers. Because of this, the average age for when kids are PTed is later when in reality kids are sometimes ready earlier than that. I can't remember where I read that and I don't have stats to back it up...but in general that makes sense. My mom potty trained me before I was 2 and she said that back then, that was the norm.

Thanks-- my son will tell us before and after he's peed and pooped. I think it's time to make a PT game plan!

  • We just started PTing DD#2 in a more serious way over the weekend and she'll be 2 next week--still very much a work in progress.  While boys often PT later than girls, every kid is different and I don't think 2 is too young.  We PTed DD#1 just before she was 2...basically if they are showing the signs of starting to understand the concept, I say go for it.  It's not a fun process (one of my least favorite parts of parenting), but if your kid's ready, he's ready.  If you start and after a week or so it doesn't seem to be getting any better (i.e. the number of successful potty trips outweighs the accidents), than you can always regroup and try again in another month or two.

Another thing to remember is that general PT and overnight PT can be 2 different processes.  With DD#1, she took to during the day PT really well, but at 5 is still wearing pull ups to bed.  The overnight thing can take longer.

  • J is in a similar phase now--he consistently tells us "I peed" after going in his diaper. So far we've had middling luck getting him to go on the potty. He's too impatient, but if we give him something to play with (like the iPad) he gets distracted. Maybe we need to try bribes.

Anyway, we're waiting for now, because daycare is going to start PTing him in a month or so. I figure it makes more sense to be consistent and do it at the same time, so we'll hold off until then.

  • I am no expert because my kid has only been wearing undies for three days, but I would definitely try. I think the hardest part is making that connection between going and going on the potty (if that makes sense). DCP got C on board with that very early. He's actually been using the potty sporadically for almost a year but we just did PTing hard core this weekend. I'm not ready to call it a success yet but it went fairly easy and I think a lot has to do with the fact that he's been familiar with the idea for awhile. If he's showing interest, I would try to take advantage of that, even if he doesn't PT for real for awhile.
