Baby Names

Roughton

So H and I decided on a boys name, but I'm not completely in love with it. (Vincent Craig)

I keep pondering whether Roughton would be a good name for a boy. It's a british name (well at least that's where I saw it), and I'm not even completely positive on how you would pronounce it. I'm thinking it has to be pronounced like "Ruff-ton". I guess my favorite part of the name is that the nickname would be Rou and that's so cute.

What are your thoughts.

Re: Roughton

  • NMS at all...but if you love it, go for it.
  • Vincent Craig is a lovely name. Roughton is a labrador retriever.

Don't let the hormones mess with your head.

  • Incredibly bad.  Plus I would want to pronounce it Rawton to rhyme with Broughton.

My thought is that it's pretty bad. Especially considering that you don't know how to pronounce it and are picking it based on a nn.

ETA: I also read it as Raw-ton.

  • Sorry, I think this one is pretty bad. Why name your child something you aren't sure how to pronounce? I really dislike that the word rough is in it - that isn't pleasant at all for a name.

I'd stick with the name you've already chosen. If you aren't happy with it, you should revisit your list and go through the process again. Do some researching and add some names and do the whole cross off thing with H to see if you still like Vincent best.

  • I would pronounce it like Rotten. I'm sorry, I don't like it at all. Vincent is a great name, though.

This, plus, if you aren't sure how to pronounce it, then you probably shouldn't use it.

  • Please don't use Roughton.  Vincent is sooo much better.

My first thought was of the condoms behind the gas station register.

  • When I first saw it I thought Rotten.

  • It seems like a bad version of a real British name that's actually #1 on our boys list... Rawdon. It's from Vanity Fair.

  • Vincent Craig is great.  Roughton, however it is pronounced (Rough-ton, Row-ton, etc.) is pretty bad IMO, esp. if you're not exactly sure how to say it.

  • I would pronounce this Row-ton since there is a town near Boston called Stoughton that is pronounced Stow-ton.

  • I would choose something else.

  • Not. Good.
  • Maybe consider skipping Roughton and name him Rou? If you are just liking the nickname just make it a name :)
  • I like Vincent.

    Roughton is terrible.

  • Vincent.  If you're not sure of pronunciation, then that's your first red flag not to chose it because many other people will do have trouble.

  • This amuses me in 2 ways:

    - You're considering this name for your child but aren't sure how to pronounce it
    - You think it might be pronounced "ruff-ton" but would nn the child "rou."  Where do you get "rou" from "ruff-ton"?
