TTC after 35

My sweet lab mix has gone over the Rainbow Bridge

To say I'm heartbroken would be an understatement.  Abby was 9 1/2 yrs old.  Perfectly healthy until last Thursday evening when I came home from work to find her lethargic and not wanting to get up or eat.  The vet met me at the clinic (it was after hours) and found that she was bleeding internally from either a ruptured spleen or a ruptured tumor on her spleen.  She went into surgery right away and had the spleen removed which had a bunch of tumors on it and she spent the night at the vet.  I was able to bring her home Friday morning and she was doing wonderfully...she was up and around, barking, eating, wagging her tail.  She really seemed like she had a new lease on life.  Then early Saturday morning she was sitting next to me on the loveseat and she started to moan like she was in pain.  She then lowered herself onto the floor and wouldn't get back up.  I rushed her back to the vet and by the time we arrived she was already going into shock.  The vet did everything he could but she ended up dying in my arms.  It was the most horrible experience of my life.  I'm so very glad I was with her though and I hope that brought her comfort in her last moments.  Oh, my heart is just breaking.  This hurts so, so much.  She was a very special dog, very sweet natured, and so smart.  I just loved her to pieces and miss her terribly.  Please say a little prayer for her that she's up there playing and having a good time.  thanks so much

Re: My sweet lab mix has gone over the Rainbow Bridge

  • I'm so sorry to hear about your lab. I can't even imagine how you must be feeling right now. I'm sure it was a comfort to her that she was in your arms and you did the best you could to make her feel better, but I know that doesn't make the hurt go away right now...

  • Oh, honey, I am so so sorry.  I know exactly how you feel and reading your post made me tear up since I just lived this.  There is nothing I can say to ease the pain and the only thing that does help is time. I'm sure it is such a shock for Abby to be fine one day and so sick the next. I don't know what is worse- the sudden death or the slow sickness. They both are just heartbreaking.   I found that sleep was my only relief in the first few days.  Look at her pictures and think of funny stories about her. I am sure she is running around having fun with my Riley.

    Big hugs.
