Toddlers: 24 Months+

Toddlers bed in front of window?

We're getting Tim's new bed today (a full) so it's going to take up some space. His room is kind of small and designed kind of weird.A few of the places we discussed putting his bed would make either part of the bed or all of in next to the window.  They are 2 large windows side by side.

For some reason I feel uncomfortable doing this, even though they are tough to open and always have the safety latch on so  they won't open more than a couple of inches.

My question is, would anyone else put a a kids bed near a window?  Oh and his room is on the second floor.

  • We don't have a choice.  DS's bed is under 2 windows.  He looks out them instead of sleeping a lot.    It did help in the summer that every night we said good night to the sun in order to get him to sleep.

  • I feel like if we try to avoid windows then he'll have no play space in his room.

  • in my house i wouldn't- our windows are very drafty..... and i'd worry that they'd open the windows since they have the ability being up higher next to them.

we had alarm sensors place on the windows in the boys rooms for that reason - just in case they opened them- we'd know.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • I'd try to avoid it, but it doesn't sound like you have a lot of options. How low is the window? I'd put some extra locks on it and maybe even put a rail on the bed on that side to cover part of the window. Our windows are low enough that a toddler laying in bed could kick the window, so I'd cover up as much as possible.

  • If the windows aren't tempered glass, it would make me too nervous.  Can you maybe put the headboard up against the windows instead of the side of the bed?  If putting the side of the bed along the window is the only option, I would put window guards up.

  • DD's room has 2 windows, so we don't have a choice.  They are higher so she can't kick them or anything, and they are new triple pane windows we had installed 5 years ago, so not drafty.

  • We have DS's bed somewhat near a window, sometimes it can't be avoided. We bought one of those little magnetic window alarms and it is REALLY loud. The window has a safety latch, but if he did manage to get it open we would know within 2 seconds and I'm sure the alarm would scare him. We put alarms on all the second story windows. They have a small switch so you can turn them off if you want a window open too. They are super cheap on Amazon.
  • We have no choice.  We have 2 beds in a small room, with closets, door, windows it's just how it works out.  I hadn't really thought about it. We have a 1 story house.  And the windows are locked.

  • Our windows give off cold air in the winter so i could never put DS's bed close to them.  Not sure where you live but here that would be a problem.  If you have no choice and cold air isn't a problem what about an alarm if your uncomfortable with it or a bar so it can't be opened by him.   I could never picture DS being able to open or windows but i guess you never know.

  • I don't think it's a terrible thing as long as you have them locked.  If they really want to get at the window, they can get out of their bed and walk over to it...

  • I would try to avoid putting the bed against a window if at all possible.

When I was about 4 years old, I was jumping on the bed, lost my balance and put my hand through the window. Luckily, there was a thick curtain that protected me from the glass and I wasn't even cut, but it could've been a lot worse.

So if you DO have a bed by the window, just stay vigilant about what your kid is doing in there when he's awake.
