Trying to Get Pregnant

Oranges while TTC?

Silly but honest question here : Since oranges are acidic, can eating them make the environment sperm travel in be more acidic & harmful to sperm? I eat so many, they're my fav. snack...I forgot to ask my Dr. this the other day...TIA

Re: Oranges while TTC?

  • If you are already worrying about food this much, you are going to have a helluva time finding anything to eat while you are PG.

  • My best educated guess would be that, its fine. I would assume that since you aren't putting it in your hoo-ha the acidity wouldn't have any affect. Your area down there is self regulating aside from inserting things directly into, which could throw off the PH balance.

But then again, some say our diet has a lot to do with how it tastes and smells... so I don't really know I guess.

OP, I've never heard anything about this...so I'm not sure.

  • My guess would be that unless you're eating 10+ lbs a day and drinking orange juice and sucking on lemons inbetween, you're fine.

Although, I'd love to see (and hear) a doctor's reaction to this question

  • Citric acid is actually converted into bicarbonate by the liver. (bicarbonate is pretty much a blood buffer). So as strange as it sounds, citric acid actually has more of an alkalinizing affect on your body than anything else.

So no. Oranges won't make your vagina more acidic. (unless you bypass the liver completely by douching OJ or something).

  • I thought it was a logical question. Some foods have affects. Ever eaten an onion? Yeah...gross, but still. A previous Dr. I saw for bad results on a pap told me it was my body/hormones balancing themselves out and accustoming themselves to my changing diet (went on a diet of mroe fresh food as opposed to the junk I ate) And she said citric acid was good for me during this time, so foods do have an effect, even if that time she just meant with my hormonal balances & such.

Yep, citric acid is good for you because it lowers the acidity of your blood, which can be raised by eating junk food & fast food. But as I was explaining, this is why you do not have to worry about it affecting the pH of your vagina. It serves as a buffer in your body :)) So snack away!

I've never straight up munched on an onion. What happens??

Yeah, I'm curious what happens if you eat an onion..  Is it like when you eat lettuce or corn?

  • Sorry if I missed someone already saying this, but there are too many comments for me to read and still remember what I was going to say.  So here you go...

There's an old wives tale that says if you eat more acid foods then your body is more likely to be more conductive to either female or male sperm, no idea which, getting to your egg.  But that's the closest I've got to anything acidic related to TTC.

And even then, eating more acid foods still gets you pregnant, but you're more likely to get a certain gender.  Though it is just an old wives tale and likely nothing more.
Son: Jackson, 11/02/06, stillborn due to PPROM and IUGR. Over the next ten years we had 9 miscarriages from 8-14 weeks. On May 18, 2016 my daughter, Ridley, was born. We're OADNBC.
  • I've read that high doses of Vitamin C (1000mg+) are not good for your CM, but an orange a day shouldn't hurt.
