What can I do for his cough?!

Poor Evan isn't feeling too great. He woke up w/ a fever (low grade, staying down w/ a rotation of Motrin/Tylenol), runny nose/watery eyes and he has a terrible cough. Not sure if it's just from a little post-nasal drip or what. It doesn't sound like anything is in his lungs, and he says his throat doesn't hurt. He's starting to lose his voice and I feel so bad for him (even though he does sound kinda cute ;)

He's napping right now and coughing up a storm... so not sure how much sleep he's getting. I gave him a spoonful of honey mixed w/ some warm water, but it didn't seem to help much. I also have his humidifier plugged in.

Re: What can I do for his cough?!

  • Rosie has exactly the same symptoms, we visited the doctor today because she was saying her throat hurt but it's just a nasty cold.  We have the head of her bed elevated, humidifier going, and a Vicks plug in going too, but I think that's about all you can do. It sucks, especially when she coughs so much she gags. Hope he feels better soon!

  • I think you're doing just about all you can do.  :(  Liam had that.  Which turned out to be RSV, which he passed along to all of us.
  • We're dealing with something similar. A nasty cough, and a 101* temp. Temp was down to 99 this morning, but spiked again a little while ago. I've been having him drink as much water as he can handle. He keeps complaining that he's thirsty, anyway.

At least Evan is trying to nap for you. Ian's in a phase where he's fighting his nap, so even though he was in his room for over 2 hours, he didn't sleep a wink. We'll probably go to the pedi tomorrow since it hasn't been that long since he had a sinus infection (ended antibiotics on Christmas Day).

  • Evan is recovering from bronciolitis (sure i spelled that wrong) and an ear infection. Totally awful.  Wasn't much that would help his cough but when Claire is coughing I put Vick's on the bottom of her feet and put socks on.  I swear by it.

    Hope he feels better soon.

  • thanks for the advice girls!

I just talked to DH and he's going to stop and grab a vicks plug in on his way home.

@ Wendy- that is how I know he is sick. He typically doesn't really nap much for us anymore (though he does at DC) He fell asleep on the couch yesterday afternoon and asked to go in for a nap today!

Hope all our LO's feel better soon! :)

  • Honey is supposed to help-  you could mix it with hot water as a drink..

    Hope he feels better soon!

  • I swear by Maty's cough syrup.  It's all natural- primarily honey, cayene pepper, garlic, etc.  It doesn't taste bad and is safe for 1 year old +.
