Anyone with Marginal Umbillical Cord?

Has the doctor mentioned anything to you about where it is (left or right side) on your body? I hadn't given it to much thought until about a week ago, when I noticed my body seems much more comfortable on the right side, NOT the left. Im curouse if this has any correlation to the cord placement.  Also, have you discussed how this will effect delivery?

Re: Anyone with Marginal Umbillical Cord?

  • I have a marginal cord insertion... is that the same thing? I've heard it called marginal insertion or battledore placenta but not marginal umbilical cord.

My placenta was low-ish on the right side at my anatomy scan at 19 w, but I just had another ultrasound today and she didn't say it, but to me it looked like it was more in the middle and much higher now. I haven't noticed a difference in pain or discomfort on one side of my body vs the other.

My OB didn't say much about it other than it wasn't something to worry about, but my MFM specialist (who I saw for other reasons) said that in labor, it could cause depressions in baby's heart rate if I laid in certain positions. He said they would also have to be more careful when delivering the placenta so that the cord didn't come off and leave the placenta inside.

It freaked me out at first but after Googling the heck out of it (and BTW, I got more hits for Battledore placenta than MCI) I was really comforted after I learned that 7-9% of first-time moms with singletons pregnancies and 30% of twin pregnancies have this. It's often an incidental finding after the placenta is delivered and many sites called it "normal variation".

  • Twin A had a marginal umbilical cord initially - he is attached on the left side of the placenta while his brother is attached on the center right.  At the last scan, they noticed that the placenta had grown further out, so he was no longer considered marginal.

I don't know if it has anything to do with the cord/placenta placement, but lately I have been more comfortable sleeping on my right side as well.

I am having a planned RCS, so it will not affect or change our delivery plans.

  • DD2 had marginal cord insertion.  Her placenta was also low lying and actually partially a previa until 32 weeks.  He marginal cord insertion was not a problem though if the placenta remained low, she was going to be delivered by c-section to avoid any possible cord pressure during birth.

When she was born, the doctors were very interested in her cord and placenta.  All were totally healthy though her cord was at the very edge of the placenta.  They said it was a very healthy cord and that she was also very healthy.

I read a lot on the Internet during my pregnancy and was worried throughout.  There are mostly happy endings out there and it always made me feel better when I read those stories.
