I've been trying for months to work with my dog on barking because I know it'll eventually wake the baby (or me napping!). Typically I tell him no, put him in his house (crate) and sometimes spray him with water. I also remind him brown is our friend (UPS = Amazon).
It's generally better, but then FedEx showed up at 8a today and he didn't do well at all. I put him in his crate and FORGOT him until just now! I happened to notice he was missing and found him in his crate still.
This is where the story gets good...we just had a huge construction trailer and lots of other activity in the culdesac, yet Buddy didn't make a sound. I think perhaps me forgetting him for a few hours might have worked!!!
Re: Yay for PR amnesia!!!
Glad it might have got his butt in gear. A couple hours in a crate is not a big deal, I wouldn't feel guilty about it. I also have tried convincing my dogs that the UPS guy is our friend, not sure it's worked, but still "happy bark" (aka annoyingly loud and obsessive bark) when DH comes home.
My dog ate a stick of butter, wrapper and all, on Saturday and she spent at least 2 hours in the crate. Some as punishment and some because I was scared she was going to slip away from me and get sick in the house. I'd rather clean up the crate than my carpets (and yes, I checked on her frequently and it's big enough if she got sick she wouldn't be sitting in it).
