NBR: advice on buying a new sofa

We get most of our furniture used, but we've decided to buy a new sofa. It is a major purchase for us, and I want to do it well. We like the Greenwich sofa from Pottery Barn, here. But it's pretty darn expensive! I wonder if we can get a similar quality and look for less. Have any of you looked for new sofas in town? We want something not ultramodern, but not ultra traditional either, and I want to be able to see a model in person before buying. I'm going to check out Bassett, Pottery Barn, Rooms to Go, and Crate/Barrel. Any other secrets or suggestions? TIA!

Re: NBR: advice on buying a new sofa

  • We got our greenwich at the Pottery Barn Outlet in San Marcos for $700 about 4 years ago.  They always have them in stock there.  I would definitely try to see what their selection is like before I bought one from PB.

  • Love me some World Market and they are having a furniture sale right now.

  • We got our couch and love seat from Laz-y-Boy on Slaughter and 35. The salespeople were amazing and so nice and we LOVE our furniture. I don't remember what we spent, though. There's an Ashley Furniture Discount store attached to their warehouse in NB, we have looked at some things there and the prices are great, so you might try them. IKEA is cheap, but I don't care for the modern look. Good luck!

  • Definitely sit on a sofa before you buy one. Sit on an expensive one like Pottery Barn and Four Hands, and then sit on some cheaper ones to give you an idea of what you're "feeling" for.  Fall into them like you would at home. Sit on both sides and the middle.

Also, my "thing" is depth of the sofa. My husband and I are both tall with long legs, and so we look for extra deep sofas. My mother, who is 5 feet, hates deep sofas. Most places like Rooms to Go and other chains have a standard depth, then a few select deeper ones. So take into account your heights.

Think about cleaning - if it's not a leather, can the covers be removed for washing? If not, you'll need to hire someone occasionally to clean the sofa.

Also, do you want the cushions to be attached or removable? One big cushion, two or a bunch of small ones?

Just some things to think about!

  • We got ours from Rooms to Go about a year ago and I'm not happy with the quality.  The cushions are out of shape already and part of the frame has been knocked out of place, you can see it poking the (very thin) fabric covering the back of the couch.

I'm planning on trying to get this all fixed under their warranty any day now, so they may rectify things but it still makes me mad.  It wasn't a cheap couch.

Wow! I will definitely check the outlet store. Thanks. The important question is: how do you like your couch?

  • DH and I have had our eye on a particular pottery barn sofa (pearce) for several months.  We're still saving up a bit more cash before we purchase.  I've heard great things about the structure and life of PB sofas.

As pp said - the outlet is great in SM, too!
