Help! I am starting to second guess myself here. My baby has always been measuring slightly big but generally still right where he needed to be. At my 36 week appt my doctor said that my uterus was measuring 38 weeks and they wanted to schedule a growth u/s. No big deal I thought. Two weeks ahead? Really? Is that cause for concern? And besides, we had been down this road before and everything was measuring just fine.
Fast forward to our growth u/s at 37 weeks and they are saying that he is measuring 9lbs 3oz! Holy crap! I couldn't stop laughing because hubby and I were taking bets on what we thought they would say and wow were we wrong! However, I am not laughing anymore. The more I think about this, the more I realize that he is still gaining weight!
I was a 7lb 12oz baby but hubby was almost 11 lbs and 3 weeks early. He is a big guy so I expected his son to be a big baby but I'm not so sure about this. I haven't gained an excessive amount of weight during this pregnancy (22 lbs as of my 37 week appt).
Help! Any other mommas out there with positive birth stories about their 9/10/11 (yikes!) lb babies? I would love to hear them as I need all the positive reinforcement I can get!
Re: Help talk me down from this ledge...
I was 9lb 3oz at birth. My mom is a little lady about 5'4" and had me, no medication of any kind, not even to induce. 9lbs doesn't necessarily always mean a c-section is necessary.
Also, ultrasound can be off as much as 2lbs. I'd be hesitant to induce based on ultrasound findings.
Thank you to everyone for saying that "yes, this is possible". My doctor's office does NOT want to induce. The entire practice is in agreement that inducing is not the best option. I was told that they would continue to monitor me and the baby but allow me to go into labor on my own. They will however induce me at 41 weeks if I haven't had LO yet. The only other thing that they did say is that if the baby gets "stuck" during delivery and they would normally use forceps or vacuum, that they would not do so with me if they believed that he was big, that they would go to c-section at that point (something I really don't want).
I have also heard that u/s can be off by as much as 2lbs, and trust me, I keep hoping that the u/s is measuring 2lbs too big and not 2lbs too small! I do have every reason to believe this baby is big though. We have had numerous 3D u/s done as part of a research study and we jokingly call LO our little butterball. He is definitely chunky. Fat rolls, chubby cheeks and all. My hubby is 6'4" so he is probably a little long but this little boy is definitely chunky.
My biggest worry is that he will stay put until 41 weeks and he will just keep gaining more weight. If he really did weigh 9 lbs last week, I can only imagine how much more he can gain in 4 weeks. I honestly thought he would be 9lbs at birth.
Thank you again for letting me know that yes, a natural birth is possible with a bigger baby and that yes, I really can do this!
