Cloth Diapering

still smells like pee....

ok so I posted a couple of days ago about 2 OS fuzzibunz shells that I borrowed from a friend coming to me smelling like pee. I have now washed them in large hot washes (top loader) 5 times! still smelled. so now I also have washed them 3 times - in hot each time with 1 tablespoon RNG and soaked for 30 mins each time. still smell. I now have them going with a squirt of blue dawn. I am doing large loads for 2 silly diapers but I figured the most water I could get in the better, right? I am going to keep rinsing until the dawn bubbles are gone but that's it! there isn't anything else I can do right if it doesn't work??

  • Maybe baking soda? Sprinkle a bunch on the damp diapers and leave them in a ziplock over night? I sprinkle it in my pail and it doesn't hurt anything. Just an idea.

  • Try rlr laundry additive and follow the instructions on the package. Worked like a charm for us! Gl

Once when I was younger my grandmother's cat peed on my overnight bag and all my clothes. So my grandfather washed them with some laundry soap and two or three cap fulls of Pine Sol. It worked for that so it would probably help with your issue.

I don't think Pine Sol is really cloth diaper friendly. I would try RLR. The diapers are clean for now, so just do a hot wash with RLR and then rinse, rinse, rinse. (and rinse more).

I have found adding a little bit of vinegar to my last rinse makes the diapers smell better AND they are softer!

Pine sol might get rid of the pee smell but there is NO way I want my kid's sensitive skin sitting in that. Sounds like a recipe for rash city.

OP, I'd second the rec for an RLR soak.

  • Pine Sol is a TERRIBLE idea.

Add 1/4 c. of baking soda to your wash, and 1/4 c. of white vinegar to your rinse.  It might not get rid of all the "pee smell" after the first wash, but will soon.

Getting rid of synthetic fibers would also help.  It's easier to get stinkies out of cotton, bamboo, hemp... than microfiber, fleece....

  • DO NOT PUT PINE SOL ON YOUR DIAPERS!!! All of the other suggestions that you were given are fine. What type of detergent are you using and what is your wash routine?
  • ah I wouldn't dream of using pine sol. I don't even use it in my house :)

they aren't my diapers so it isn't my wash routine, etc that is the issue! I borrowed them to try it out. my diapers are fine, and are natural fibers, except the elastic I think is too tight for my LOs thighs hence borrowing the FB to try out since they have adjustable elastic.

I am still rinsing out dawn. been 3 rinses and I am still getting bubbles. hoping once they are rinsed they will finally smell ok, so I can finally try them!!!! if not I will look into RLR or maybe some baking soda/vinegar.

    thanks all!
