C-sections

Sharp, pulling pain

I had a c-section 10 days ago.  Unscheduled, after about 4 hours of pushing.  I was very disappointed but our daughter is so beautiful, I'm trying to focus on the good!

Anyhow, I feel like my pain is slowly improving.  I haven't taken any Percocet for a few days now and I just take the ibuprofen once in a while.  My left side feels great, I can lift my leg, etc.  But there is one spot on the right side (not right over the incision, it's kind of difficult to localize).  When I move in a certain way or walk upstairs it feels like it's pulling or pinching and it's excrutiating and makes me just want to lie down and cry.  I'm definitely favoring the one side.  I called the doc and they said that this sounds normal for being one week out.  It certainly doesn't feel normal.

I think the pain is getting better, but as the numbness wears off it sometimes seems like I'm going backwards and the pain is so frustrating.

I had a breakdown the other day, crying and crying (this of course after my parents left), i know it's still early but the I just wish I could feel like my normal self again.  I'm usually very active and it's hard just to sit at home, but on the other hand I'm sort of scared to go out when I feel so bad.

Am I being impatient, should I just take the percocet more often, should I work through the pain and try to ignore it?

  • Your body is telling you, you are doing to much.  I remember a weird pain after my 2nd and I think I might have pulled the inside incision.  It took longer to heal because I was doing to much at home.  take it easy

This exactly. Sounds like you are doing too much and if you are in pain I would definitley take the pain meds, that is what they are there for. Hope you feel better soon!

  • Yes it's normal. I had the exact same thing and I wasn't doing too much. It went away after about 2 weeks.
  • Ditto others.  You say you're having the pain when you're moving- so just slow down, momma!!  I went through a period where I was off the prescription pain stuff for 2 days and then needed them again for a few days and I more slowly weaned myself off the second time.  I was more in the range of 3-3.5 weeks before I wasn't taking anything (including ibuprofen) for pain.  And I was told to really limit stair use for the first 2 weeks, so I did.

  • Honestly, if you feel like you are having pain, just take it easy for a bit.

I disagree with some of the PP, however. When I was in the hospital with LO, one of the nurses made an observation about how quickly I said my meds were wearing off and the level of pain I was having. She said that Percocet can make you gassy, which can actually make your pain worse than it otherwise would be if you weren't taking it (gas pulling on stitches, etc). She said if I felt up to it when I went home to cut down on it or not take it. The last Percocet I took was in the hospital and it was the best decision I made. Yes I still had pain but I managed it with only Motrin. I noticed after I stopped taking the percocet some of my pain was gone. I kept walking and never restricted myself on stairs (though if I did feel like I was overdoing it I would stop and relax).

Basically, I would recommend if you can stay away from the percocet do it... but know your body and if you are having pain stop what you are doing and relax even if only for 10 mins.

  • As for pain on one side: The surgeon ends the stitches and pulls tighter on one side, so it is completely normal for one side to feel more painful/tighter than the other.  Ditto pp's- continue to take it easy and listen to your body!
