High calorie formula

I read something online a little bit ago that kinda got me worried. It said something about high calorie formula being hard on a baby's kidneys. (Mind you, this was not from a reputable website...it was from an average joe) but I was wondering if there was any truth behind it?

I have Reagan on 24 calorie Alimentum because she gains weight so slowly. I am going to bring this up with the GI in a week or so when we see him but I was just curious if any of your LO's are on high calorie formula still or if you have switched to 20 calorie? Did you notice any difference with their weight gain? Did they seem to make up for it by eating more?

Re: High calorie formula

  • That is more likely once you get beyond 27kcal/oz or have the protein content too high- 24kcal usually doesn't get there. Def see what your GI doc thinks. HTH!

  • Our DD was on Enfamil Enfacare 22 Calorie.  We had to mix 5.5oz of water and 3 scoops of formula to make it 24 calories.  She gained a pound every 3 weeks and NEVER had a problem with her kidney's.  Normal wet diapers.
