Question about water breaking

I'm 38w5d, and married to a high school girls basketball coach.  We live 65 miles from the hospital and travel to games that are anywhere from 30 minutes to 1.5 hrs in other directions from the hospital.  I ride the bus with the team as a school liaison to help monitor the girls (but have a friend available to drive in case I'd go into labor at a game).  I'm a FTM and have this worry that my water will break at a game and I won't have enough time to get back to my town to get my bags and get to the hospital before I'm into full-blown active labor.  I know it's different for everybody, but about how much time will I have after my water breaks to get to the hospital?

Re: Question about water breaking

  • It's hard to say.  Most will go hours after their water breaks before they're ready to push (sometimes before they even start contracting) while others only have their water break when they're close to delivering.  If you're concerned about it, bring your hospital bag with you to games so you can go straight to the hospital.

  • If its coming that fast you can always skip getting the bags! Leave a house key with someone to bring them to you... My water broke in labor at home at 9 pm and my son was born via c section at 8 the next night. Everyone is different obviously and most people I hear their water breaks at the hospital or it's broken for them.
  • Like you said, it is different for everyone. My first was born 4 hours after my water broke (first sign of labor). But hopefully you will get a sign before that happens.

  • I live an hour from our hospital and the doctor told me to come right in when my water breaks. She said I should have plenty of time, especially because it is my first baby. I was told if there is an emergency to just get to the closest hospital.

  • I think you should just bring your bag with you if you are worried about it. I did not know when my water broke. It was just a trickle here and there, so I thought I had lost bladder control and was just peeing a tiny bit every now and then. I did not notice contractions until about 12 hours after that started happening. LO was born about six hours after I realized that I was in labor. This is one of those things that will be different for everyone.

  • I may be in the minority here, but my water didn't break until I was already at the hospital. I gave birth about an hour later.

  • Thanks for the input, ladies.  It's so nice to have a place to get feedback on my questions!  I think I'll have my friend who is planning on driving me if this would happen just put my "necessities" bag in her car when we travel so that it isn't on the bus, but is still with me or at least in the same parking lot! :)
