Re: FFFC clicky poll #3 leaving child alone in car

  • I said never on this one, but that's because leaving DD in the car in our driveway while I ran inside would mean leaving her in a car next to a fairly busy street while I ran all the way around the apartment building to go in and get in our apartment. That's too risky for me. Thinking of my parents house with an attached garage, I wouldn't think twice of doing it.

  • If it's pouring rain, I have to run one baby out to the car in the driveway then run back in and grab the other one if I'm alone.

  • It's happen twice, but I live in a townhome inside an apartment community so our "driveway" it's our parking space that is only 10 yards from our door, so I've left him in the car and ran inside to grab what I'd forgotten.

P.S. And I've felt terrible for doing it, I'm one of those paranoids mothers!

  • I've left him sleeping in the car while I unloaded groceries and grabbed a book to read in the car if I wanted to wait out the nap.

  • I leave Lydia in the car while I go inside the house to get something I forgot. It's only 1 minute max, and she has a 4 yr old sister with her. I don't feel quite so bad about that. (I don't do it all the time..... It only happens once in a great while!)

When Layla was this age, I NEVER left her alone.... I was very paranoid.

  • I have left LO in the car multiple times for 1-2 minutes at a time when I forgot something inside or if I have to make multiple trips to load or unload the car.  We do have an attached garage to our house, so I feel comfortable with this.

  • I have left him in the car in the garage while he is sleeping and I am unloading stuff like groceries pretty much every time I go grocery shopping.  He wakes up as soon as I take him out of the car, so I'd rather him have a few more minutes of sleep and I can have the free hands to carry stuff in. It's never more than a few minutes.

I have also left him in his jumperoo in the house for a few minutes alone while I let the dog out. I'll leave the door open a bit so I can hear him.

  • If DD is napping when we get home from the store I always leave her in the carseat in the garage while I unload the shopping bags. I think she is much safer asleep in the car seat alone than awake in the house alone. That being said if I did not have a garage I would never leave her in the car because it is just too hot here.

  • Closed locked garage - yes. Driveway or anywhere else - no way.

  • Does it count if you are pumping gas and they are in the car? then yes.

any other time, no. But our garage is not attached to our house, so it would really freak me out to leave her in there alone even if it was only for a minute.

  • With twins, I don't have much of an option. When going somewhere by myself, I can't run both of them out to the van at the same time. So I'll grab everything or most of what I need plus 1 baby, run everything out to the van and strap in the first baby before returning for baby 2 and the rest of my stuff. While putting baby 1 in the car, I leave the front door open so I can see baby 2 while I'm strapping in baby 1. Baby 1 is left in the car for a minute or 2 while I grab his brother. In the summer, I left the door to the van open during this song and dance. Now that it's cold, I don't do that anymore.

  • if he is sleeping when we arrive home, i will often take my shopping bags/diaper bag/coffee into the house  first (since i have to make two trips anyway).  i live in a regular house with a driveway out front.  not a busy street.

i leave him in the car when i go to the gas station (if i am paying inside).  i park right next to the kiosk - it's all windows.  so i can see my car and him the entire time.

same with the convenience store - i go to a particular store that is all windows and the parking is right in front of the door (as in, there is a sidewalk seperating the parked car and the door).

those are the only circumstances that i leave him in the car.

  • Welp, I'm probably going to get flammed for this...

I live in the country, in the middle of no where, my only neighbors are my in-laws.

I leave her in the car while I unload groceries.

If I run in the convenience store (small town), while she's sleeping I park by the door and can see the vehicle the whole time.
