Baby Names

Gus as a full name

DH and I both like the name Gus. The problem is that I don't think it counts as a "real" full name, and DH hates all of the full names that could go with it (August, Augustus, Angus). DH says he could get on board with just Gus, but I don't think I can do it.

We went through this same thing with Leo and I ended up caving. Now I'm glad, I think just plain Leo works perfectly. What do you guys think, is "Gus" another name like Leo that can go on its own, or does it need a more formal name to go with?

Re: Gus as a full name

  • I think it is a fine stand alone name I like it as it is better than the names like August and Angus etc.

  • Hm. I agree that Leo is fine on it's own, but I feel like Gus all by itself isn't enough. It doesn't feel substantial enough. :runs off to search for alternative Gus names:

Okay, I admit some of these names are probably not right up your alley, but here goes: Argus, Ferguson/Fergus, Augusto, Gustavo/Gustav/Gustaf, Guillermo, Gulliver, or Guthrie.

    Good luck!

  • This might not be your cup of tea either but, I like Magnus nn Gus.

  • I like Leo by itself, to me it sounds like it could be a nn or a stand alone name. Gus doesn't work for me as a stand alone; it sounds like a nn.

  • I have a good friend whose son's name is Gus (no "formal" name). I think it works just fine. I guess a more formal name would look better on a business card, wedding invitation, etc., but I don't think it's that big of a deal since it's not cutesy or baby-ish.
