Davinci Emily Crib Conversion

I'm trying to convert Will's crib to a toddler bed and it's impossible! I've got the manual pulled up online and I'm supposed to just remove the front rail and use the same screws to put on the toddler rail...but every time I do this, I have about an inch of screw sticking out of each hole. 

Anyone have the same issue or have the same crib and know what the secret to converting it to a toddler bed?

Maybe this is the universe's way of telling me that transitioning him is a stupid idea?
