Full or Queen Bed?

We're getting ready to move my DS to a bigger bedroom and buy him new bedroom furniture.  It's a very large room and I'm wondering if I should go for the full or twin sized bed.  What size bed is your preschooler in?  Right now he's in a toddler bed.  I'm also considering a bunk bed, full at the bottom, twin on the top.  But I'm thinking maybe he's too young?  He'll be 4 in March.  TIA!

Re: Full or Queen Bed?

  • DS has a twin bed.  If he had a bigger room, we would have put him in our old queen bed when we got our king bed.  I'd go with a queen.  Why would you need bunk beds if you only had one child?  I don't understand that part of your post, sorry.

  • We moved DD directly from her crib onto a full. The twin didn't really seem much bigger so I figured it's always better to have more room. It's been nice when DH and I lay by her at night to read her stories. Good luck!

  • We moved DS to a full-size bed (his crib converted) at 2.5. He loves it! He doesn't have a huge room, but I always felt it was important for him to have plenty of space as he grows. If you have the space, I suggest definitely getting at least a full-size bed.

  • My kids are in twin beds and I never considered any other size. DH and I both had twin beds until we moved out on our own, so it never occurred to me to do a bigger bed. I figure the smaller bed just means more play/hangout space in their room.

We're considering the bunk bed just to have the extra space for family visits, sleepovers, etc.  We're also not done having children so it would come in handy for that as well.  But we don't HAVE to have the bunk bed, we will probably go for just a full bed.

Ditto this. I never felt that my twin bed was small growing up. But if you have extra large bedrooms and want to potentially use the child's bed as a guest bed in a sticky situation, then having a full in there wouldn't be a bad thing.

  • We got DD a twin bed.  We thought about a bunk bed (like you, for sleepovers, family visits, etc), but decided not to because of DD2 on the way.  If she's anything like DD1 who was a daredevil climber, it won't be safe for a ladder in the house for a few years.

  • I would consider a full. Especially if you are planning on having family visit. We were going to do three twin beds (I wish we had the ceilings to do a bunk). But we got a never used full size bed from my husbands grandparents before they moved to florida. So my oldest is in the full, and then my middle son is in the twin, and there is another twin for the youngest if I ever move him out of the crib ; ) when guests stay, we will move my oldest to a sleeping bag in his brothers room and the guests will have to sleep on the full.

  • dd sleeps in a full size bed. I would go with the full especially if you got the room to do it.

  • I did a twin with a pop-up trundle bed tucked underneath.  Perfect.  Gives her a ton of room to play but there is room to sleep at least 2 if need be.  I will say I started her off in bunk beds but found they took up a LOT of room and also I wasn't comfortable with the ceiling clearance or what would happen if I put a ceiling fan in there.  We ditched the bunk beds and got her a twin with cubbies in the headboard which she loves (and provides a perfect monitor perch for us).

  • My daughter has a full size bed.  She went from a toddler bed to the full size and sleeps well.  She's the type that sleeps around the entire bed so a twin wouldn't have worked.  Like you, we considered the bunk beds with the full at the bottom but our daughter is so "courageous" we easily saw a disaster happening.  The top bunk would have been too tempting for her not to try a big jump or something.

  • My DD is still in her toddler bed. Probably this summer we will switch her to a full size bed. Her room is pretty good size and I figure the full will be handy for when we hav family come visit.

  • DS sleeps on a full bed and so will DD once we redo her room. Having the bigger beds is very convenient when we have guests and the kids will have room to grow. The bedrooms are spacious enough for furniture and for them to play in their room if they don't want to go to the playroom. Twin beds are fine; DH and I both had twin beds growing up. However, if you have the space go with a bigger bed.

  • Ds was put in a Queen right after his 1st bday. We actually got him a complete bedroom suite. We figured why spend the money to have to upgrade in a year or so. This way he can take it with him when he gets his own place. We also did a queen instead of full because of his potential height.Being 6ft+ in a full bed wouldn't be much fun.

For his sister will be getting a full size since I certainly hope she doesn't get as tall as the men do. The women on either of our sides are 5'7" and under.

  • DS was a crib to Full size bed too :)  It's nice for reading books together before bed or those awful nights when he's sick I can just go into his room and be with him in his bed rather than the other way around!

  • We bought twin beds for both of the boys last year. They're going to share a room in the next few years and we'll probably get bunk beds for them. Once they hit the teen years, and if they want to and space provides, they might go back to having their own rooms. If that happens, we'll probably get them bigger beds at that point in time. It'll probably be about time for a new bed anyway at that point.
