Cloth Diapering

Covers, fitted, PFs - Oh my!

Ok so w/ a newborn before I switch to OS once he's 10lbs +.  How many covers would you recommend in addition to fitted and PFs?

I'm leaning towards Thirsties due wrap snap for my covers, 24 Indian PFs (12 infant, 12 newborn), and I was thinking of buying a couple of fitted to try them out since I am a newbie.

Leaning towards for my fitted (Thirsties Duo Fab Fitted Cloth Diapers and Kissaluvs Cotton Fleece Fitted Diaper) just to see if I love fitteds even though my gut/money conscious part says I would prefer PFs since they are cheaper and I can use them later to stuff my BG 4.0s and double my Flips.

Thoughts?  Ok I went off on a tanget - how many NB covers do I need (laundry every other day or even every day is fine since who knows how long he'll wear NB)?  PFs? Fitted?

Thanks!

Re: Covers, fitted, PFs - Oh my!

  • 2 dozen diapers (mix and match any way you want), 3-6 covers

    I adored my fitteds

  • minimum 24 diapers (PFs or fitteds, whatever you want)
We had 10 NB covers. I know people often say they get by with about 4-6, but we liked having more. It meant we didn't have to be so perfect in how we folded/snappied the PFs because we had plenty of covers for when poop got on the cover. Our NB covers were Thirsties Duo wraps, Bummis (the double gusset ones), and Proraps.

FWIW, we detested (is there a stronger word) the Duo Wrap in snaps. The aplix is awesome. But we could never get a good fit with the snap. They just didn't fit right. The Bummis were fine. The Proraps worked well and were cheap. If you want cheap and functional, I suggest proraps.

Also, our favorite covers are now the Blueberry Coveralls. Both DH and I think they are better than the Duo Wraps. (However, we didn't get the Coveralls until he was long out of NB dipes, so I don't know how they work for a NB.)

  • I haven't started yet, but I bought a pack of 6 Real Nappies newborn covers off of amazon for $36.  I didn't want to put a big money investment in newborn covers as I plan on using flips as soon as DS fits in them.

  • So I was going to go with all prefolds and covers, but have recently decided to get some used fitteds (which is way more economical, and you can resell them as well, they hold value pretty well it seems).  I currently have about 16 NB covers (for twins), but think I have about 4 too many, so am destashing those.  I might just wait until after I have them, since it doesn't hurt anything to keep them around a few more months I guess, and having too many covers would be better than not enough!

Kissaluvs seem to go pretty fast, but I finally found a lady selling a huge lot of them locally and got 19 of them at once.  I plan to get 2 dozen prefolds as well, and about a dozen of the pocket/AIOs for nighttime.

  • We have 30 pfs in infant size (I don't think you need newborn size unless you have a super small baby) but you could easily get away with 24. We have 8 thirsties covers (sized xs and duo wraps w/ snaps) and could be fine with 5 or 6. No fitteds. No need.
