PSA: Spot testing products

This may seem like a silly PSA to some of you but it's amazing how often we forget that just because it is a product that can be used for other children that it might not be a good idea for ours.

Here is my PSA story.  My youngest DS had severe congestion, like enough so he was waking up choking on phlegm.  We were aspirating his nose, he had a humidifier, elevated his mattress, and put baby's vapo rub on his chest.  The congestion was still really bad.  So I asked around and it was highly recommended to try a vapor bath.  It's a bubble bath that contains menthol and eucalyptus to loosen congestion.  We did it and it helped a bit, no problem.  Well older DS then saw that younger DS had a fun new bath thing and wanted some in his bath.  I said no because he wasn't sick, DH said what's the big deal, it won't hurt him.  So we put very little in his bath water too.

Well, I was unfortunately right.  DS #1 had an allergic reaction to it.  He is covered head to toe in a rash, Mostly on the trunk of his body.  His tummy, bum and genitals are the worse areas.   Poor kid is itching everywhere.  We have him on allergy medicine and are treating it but it is slowly, slowly getting better, it's really hard trying to get him not to scratch.

So anyway I should have spot tested.  That goes with sunscreens, lotions, diaper rash cream.  Anything, if your kid has sensitive skin, spot test.  I have always done in the past because we had some issues with certain brands of diapers/wipes with DS but I spaced it this time.
