CP: Stripping membranes WWYD

Re: CP: Stripping membranes WWYD

  • I wasn't going to get mine stripped. Our Bradley teacher told us it was really uncomfortable and she had severe cramping afterwards, but then my cousin had it done and had no pain at all. I've been soooo uncomfortable this whole time and we were at our 40 week apt on Tuesday and our midwife asked if I wanted to have it done, so I just decided to do it. It was pretty uncomfortable, but I kind of was expecting that. I didn't have cramping afterwards though, luckily.

  • Everything you wrote in your clicky poll describes my pregnancy thus far. I am 1 day past my due date, and my MW actually told me at yesterday's check up that she wouldnt strip them since Ive had such a good pregnancy.

I figure they know best, so I dont plan to argue.

  • Can I also mention that I think I hate you ;)? No aches & pains? Sleeping through the night? Pffft.
Connor Thomas 6/6/08. Discovered missed miscarriage at 17 wks 3 days, D&C 11/25/09. Please, please, please - BFP 5/21/11, EDD 2/1/11. Beta@12DPO=52, Beta@14DPO=158. U/S 7/7/11 shows strong baby measuring a couple days ahead!!! Pregnancy Ticker
  • My fear of going too much past my due date is the risk of the baby "breathing" in merconium. The risk obviously increases the longer the baby is in there. My friends baby was in NICU for months because of it, so it has kind of worked its way into my worries.

I know, I know. I am SUPER lucky!

OB brought up stripping membranes at my next appt (39 weeks) and said if I wanted to she could do it for me. DH said "go for it", but I am hesitant. I think I'd consider it at 40 weeks or later, but not sure about at 39 weeks. Not that it really matters since my body will only do what it wants to do!

  • I've also been debating this. As you already know I'm in no rush to have this baby, the discomfort is manageable and I was against stripping them (bradley classes as well). However, I was thinking about discussing it at my 40 wk appointment with my OB in case he starts pushing for an induction, which I really want to stay away from. So I think I might have the doc do it to try to put off an induction/pitocin. Hope you figure out what's best for you!

I'm right there with you and the OP as well.  Easy pg, not in a rush to get her here, however, I'd rather start with more "natural" induction methods (membrane stripping, nipple stim, sex) to get things going that have a medical induction with drugs.

I'm 38 weeks and so far my dr has no plans to induce.  We'll see what happens next week at my appt.  I have a growth u/s to see how big LO is.  At 28 weeks she was in the 90% and we want to get an estimate of how big she may be getting.

  • I said if I went past my due date but I want to add that I'd like to try it before trying any other artificial induction methods. Didn't work for me last time... but the pitocin certainly did. Sad

    these were my thoughts!!! Lol.

I've been having horrible aches and pains and need medication to get even close to that much sleep!  I didn't have them sweep my membranes.  I did with my first pregnancy at 39w5 and it didn't work so it was a waste of pain.  And it gave me the really  bad cramping and blood tinged discharge.  I went back to work after my appt and found it very hard to walk OR sit for the last 2 hours of my shift.

  • I had my membranes stripped today.  As the doctor put her hand up there, I had a really painful contraction.  The contraction was so painful that I was concentrating on breathing and trying not to focus on it.  Then she was done.  So, I was definitely in lots of pain but I was so focused on the contraction that i have no idea if the membrane stripping was painful or not.  She was in and out pretty quick.
