WWYD? Temp filling in...

Ok, so now to add to my lovely day of frickin craziness....

My temp called three times while I was in the hospital today.  She left me a voicemail that said "Check your e-mail." because that is so extremely helpful for me to know if it is an emergency.  I called her back later tonight and answered her question (something I've gone over with her a million times already...not an emergency).

At the end of our call, she proceeds to tell me that people have been asking if I've had the baby and she told them that I would be induced next Wednesday and they all wish me luck.  Wait, what?  How did you even know I was going to be induced??

First of all, I haven't told any of my co-workers or even my bosses, or her that I was going to be induced next week.  The only way that she could have known is by going through my "Sent Items" because I sent a private message titled "Rachel's Medical" to our HR head.  Obviously our HR person wouldn't share that kind of information with her, a temp.

She has access to my mailbox while I am gone.  I'm good with that for her to read incoming e-mails.  My problem is that she is sharing my private medical information with co-workers!  There were some medical details in there that I'm not happy to have other co-workers know, including the fact that there are compensation details in that e-mail.

Ugh.  She's there for eight more weeks and I have no idea if I should say something to HR or just let it slide since she will be gone soon enough.  What would you do?

Re: WWYD? Temp filling in...

  • I would politely but firmly remind her that she is there to do a job, not fill in my co-workers on the status of my pg and in the future all inquries about your pg or LO should be adressed directly to you.  I would also remind her that I'm on maternity leave and to ask others at the office for answers to her questions first and that contacting me directly, either through phone or email, should only be done as a last resort.

I would probablly also mention something to HR letting them know that she's shared private info with my co-workers and that I don't feel comfortable with that and could they please remind her that certian things are private and are not to be shared.

  • I would go a step further and delete everything in the sent folder.  If there are important emails in there, delete all of a personal nature you don't want your temp seeing.

I also think it's worth mentioning to HR.  The temp should have known better than to share your personal information with the whole office.

  • I agree with the PPs: next time you talk to her on the phone, let her know you are not okay with her passing along any information about your pregnancy other than things you specifically say are fine to tell others. And delete all your sent emails as they go - BCC them to your private email if they are anything you feel you might need later.

Yes Best solution I could think of.
