Awake time for newborns

My preemie girls have hit term and are definitely awake more often then when they first came home. They're great at feeding together but it's rare they'll be awake at the same time after feedings. Did this happen to you? I'm assuming it's way too early to attempt to keep them awake at only 3 weeks old. Just curious if you had babies on the same feeding schedule who wouldn't keep the same awake and sleep schedule?

Re: Awake time for newborns

  • Mine are 10 weeks old today and I am still dealing with the same problem. Last week I tried to keep one awake so that they would be awake at the same time and then nap at the same time. It was such a disaster. He ended up getting overtired and then wouldn't sleep. He took maybe an hour nap all day. I left it alone until this week and am trying to keep them both awake if they are not totally out. It's slow going but I'm trying to work on it because I need time to get stuff done. I haven't cooked or cleaned other than laundry since they were born and I could really use a nap. GL!

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  • IIRC, I would get them up to feed at the same time but I would put them back down when they were individually ready. It was awful for awhile there. But we've been on a pretty consistent and together schedule since about 3/4 months old.

Hang in there momma, you can do it!

  • I fed my girls every three hours, so for the most part, I woke them up and they stayed on mostly the same schedule that way.  I made sure to follow the eat/play/sleep even if the play part was only 5 minutes after they ate.
  • I'm in the same boat as you. My girls are 4 weeks and I'm a mess because one of them is always awake while one is asleep, even through the night. It is getting better, but I feel like I can't have a minute to myself.

It's nice to see others are dealing with this too. If you find a solution or something that works for you, please LET ME KNOW!
