C-sections

3 c sections? Anyone?

I'm only prego with our 2nd baby, but it will be my 2nd c-section in 3 years. My dh and I think we want one more and began talking to our midwife about it and she is weary of a third c-section..basically made it sound like we were pressing our luck. V-bac is not a huge option for me, with my first our DD I never dialated and after 36 hours and tons of Pitocin ended up with a C-section, with this baby it is just planed it will be...are there any moms who had 3 c-sections and don't regret it, didn't have complications and would do it again? I don't think its fair my body dictates the amount of babies I can have BUT that is life and I am lucky to be blessed with two, dont get me wrong! Anyways anyone? Our plan was to try again summer 2013 and our midwife said if we were going to again that would be the soonest.

Re: 3 c sections? Anyone?

  • Hmmm...I hadn't heard that.  This is just our first LO, so I can't speak of personal experience, but my mom had 3 c-sections.  My brothers and I were all "planned" pregnancies and we are all 2 1/2 years apart.  If 3 c-sections was possible 25-30 years ago, I can't imagine that it wouldn't be possible today.

  • Just had my 3rd c-section Nov 29. This was my 3rd section in 4 years. I don't regret it one bit! I would most definitely have another child but we decided 3 was a perfect number for us. I had my 2nd section 18mths after my oldest was born and my 3rd when my 2nd child was 2 years old. I think 3 years in between c-secitons is very good spacing, but a c-section is major surgery. Better than what I did. My midwife wanted to shoot me when I got pregnant with #2.  Good Luck to you.

  • It's totally possible but your risks and complications do increase:

  • I had my third last April.  There wasn't any complications and it only took a tad bit longer ( like a few minutes) because of scar tissue.  My recovery wasn't any worse than the others and my Dr said he didn't see a problem with me having another one.

Did you have a vertical incision perhaps ?

  • I have only had 2 but DH and I would like 4 children. I have spoken with each of the 4 doctors at my practice about this as well as my old ob (different practice) and was told by all 5 doctors that there is no set number of csections a person can have. It depends on you...how your body handles the surgery, heals, etc. My second csection was 2 months ago and I was told there was minimal scar tissue and absolutely no reason we can't have more children. Personally, I plan to take it one at a time. We will definitely be having another baby in a couple years and if all goes well and there is no medical reason not to we may decide to try for #4. We'll see. My first 2 csections were 21 months apart. At my 6 week pp checkup after #2 I asked how long we should wait before #3 and was told they recommend 1 yr before getting pregnant again but that recommendation is the same for vaginal or csection. No offense to midwives, they are great but I would feel more comfortable talking to an ob about this since it was an ob who performed your first section and it will an ob doing future sections. If you're wanting to vbac midwives are often a lot more vbac friendly though!

  • Not wanting to VBAC at all loL! I don't have vertical scar but do have scar tissue, my scar is raised but I healed pretty quick. I don't remember ever not being able to do something because of the pain or anything and in six weeks I was back to normal. This is great news for me, thank you I have always imagined 3 kids God willing and definitely will have a talk with my Dr. I haven't met him yet ironically, he is constantly getting called to labor on my apt. days :)

  • I'm having my third c/s next week (in under 4 years) and my ob is already talking about my 4th.  What it really comes down to is how your body heals and they don't know that until they go in each time.  If the scar tissue is minimal, you shouldn't have a problem having at least one more.

  • My OB didn't think twice about me being pg again. I only had 15 months between my 1st c/s and 2nd c/s. This time it'll be 20 months between my c/s. I know several other women that have had 3 c/s and most their oldest was only 3 or so when they had the 3rd c/s.

  • I haven't personally, but my mom had 6 (safe) c-sections. Her OB just told her with each one whether he thought her body, mostly uterus, could handle another one. She had no problems or complications. I really agree with PPs that it all depends on the individual. I would get another doc's opinion if they told you you couldn't go for 3.

  • I personally only had one c/s - however my SIL just had her 4th successful c/s. She decided she was finished and got her tubes tied however her doc didnt and wouldnt have had a problem with her having another kid via c/s.

  • my mom had four sections...Usually they tell you after each surgery if your scar tissue is okay for another section.  I have been okd for a third.  I had two sections in under 2 years and I will probably try to get pregnant in a year or two.

  • My OB in Austin was 100% in favor of me having a 3rd c/s.  He said he'd performed up to EIGHT on one woman, and that it totally depended on the scar tissue and healing of the mother.  My new OB in WI didn't see any issue with a 3rd c/s, either, but did say that at 4 he starts to be a bit more concerned.  We'll be done at 3.

  • I have had 2, 14 months apart.  my doctor suggested we wait a full year to get pregnant again but said I am fine to have another one if we decide to.  Good luck!
  • I'll be having my third (and final) c-section next month.  I have not had any complications (related to the c/s) and am happy with my choices.  I got pregnant with DD2 18 months after DD1's c/s and pg this time about 20 months after DD2's.  The OB who delivered DD2 said that she felt confident that I'd be able to handle a third c-section without any problems - she just wanted me to wait at least 1 year before TTC again.

  • I only have the option of c-sections due to a surgery I had and I was told there is no limit to the number of kids.  I would like 4.
  • I'll be having my 3rd c/s this summer. I think my doc said 4 is the limit for her.

  • I had my third c-section in just over 3 1/2 years last March, with no complications. I've actually found recovery to be easier each time.  Of course, everyone is different.  I'm pregnant again, and will be having 4 c-sections in 5 years.  V-bac is unfortunately not an option for me, either.  Is there any other reason for your midwife's thoughts?
