Bleeding after Internal Exam (TMI?)

I had my 1st internal 1 week ago. No dilation, no big deal - wasn't even uncomfortable.

2nd internal was yesterday.  Again, no dilation. It was uncomfortable, but LO also jumped and kicked right when OB was doing the check (he even commented that he got punched). I started having backache after I left the dr's office, and my BH picked up. I didn't think much of it, I've been having lots of BH through this whole pg.

An hour later I go to pee, and found I was bleeding. Enough to have some clotty looking things at the bottom of the toilet, as well as a good amount on the TP.  I ended up bleeding a quarter sized amt on a pantyliner, as well as a little each time I wiped when I peed my million times for the rest of the evening.

I understand spotting is typical after an internal. But how much is something to be concerned about?

Let me mention too, that I've been told I have a blood vessel right on the surface of my cervix. I always spot after a pap, but never to the amount that I experienced yesterday.

TIA for any advice/experiences you ladies have to share!

Re: Bleeding after Internal Exam (TMI?)

  • Is it continuous bleeding or just the one-time spotting?  If it continues, I'd give your doctor a call.  It's still not a bad idea to call if the amount troubles you.  Otherwise, you should be ok.

It has tapered off and stopped now.

I wasn't worried about it... I tend to just figure my body knows what it's doing and let it proceed.

My SO was the one who completely freaked out and insisted I call L&D last night the instant I told him that I was bleeding.  His ex-wife lost several babies before they finally had their son, so I think his brain is to always assume the worst is happening.

I think the whole 'follow your intuition' thing is a good idea, and certainly would have called if it freaked me out.  Just wondering if other ladies have experienced similar bleeding... kind of to make sure my intuition is leading me the right direction!

  • My MD said spotting is normal, bleeding enough for fill a pad is not normal.

  • After my first internal I bled about the same as you, with clots on the TP and in the toilet. I had a little bit through the night and into the next day, but just a blood tinge.

The next week I had pretty much no bleeding... So I would guess that what you're experiencing is normal!

Thank you for calming my fears!

I really wasn't worried, until SO was freaking out so much. Pshh... men...

  • after my cervical check yesterday, the dr. said I could expect some spotting "or more than that" but to call if it was "heavy bleeding".

If it continues to be heavy and red, I'd call but if it's tapered off you're probably fine.
