Preemies

When will my baby stop gaining weight so quickly?!?!

For those of you with older preemies, when did they stop gaining weight quickly?  My DD is 2 months 3 weeks old (3 weeks adjusted) and she went home on Nov. 26th at 5lb 10oz, and has gained 0.5 lbs every week since she has been home; today at our RSV shot appt. I found out she is up to 9lbs!  While I am happy that she is growing and gaining weight well, I'm curious as to when her weight gain will slow down - at this rate she is going to be huge!

  • Ours were 35w (one IUGR and the size of a 31weeker). Our 5 lber doubled her weight by 3 mo, and our 3.5 lber tripled her weight by 3 mo. They've leveled off a little now that they're not crazy tiny, but they've settled into their growth curve I thnk (of 10th and 3rd percentile for weight). You might just have a big baby :)
  • My DD started off at 3lb 6 oz so she will likely triple her weight by 3 months (up to 10 lbs) - I hope she's not a big baby, she's so cute being tiny!

  • We slowed down after their 9 month appointment (6 adjusted).  Since then they are both sitting comfortably at 25% for actual age.  (They are big boys though!)

  • You sound a lot like me.  My former 2lb4oz 27 weeker is growing like a weed.  At his 6 month appointment he weighed 17 1/2 pounds and was in the 40th percentile for his actual age.   Our girl is growing well too, but is a good 4 pounds less than her brother.  Maybe your baby is just going to be big?  I am thinking this is the case for my guy!

  • My 1st son (not a preemie) gained weight really quickly for quite a few months.

I apparently just have babies that grow fast because DS#2, born at almost 34 wks at 5lbs 14 ounces was almost 9lbs 14 ounces last week at 5 weeks!

  • My "little" guy has been gaining about 1lbs per week lately. He was 12lbs 9oz at 6 weeks adjusted/ 4mo actual. He's genetically predisposed to being a big guy though- DH is 6'4" and was 9.5lbs at birth. Term babies usually gain 20-30g or about 1oz per day until 4mo then they slow down. Yay for growing preemies!

  • My girls were born at 34w 5d - 5lb 6oz and 5lb 5 oz. By 3 months old they were in the 90th percentile for their actual age (off the charts for adjusted). Some babies are just big. The girls are still measuring ahead. At 18 months old they are wearing 2T. Enjoy the "little" butterball :-)

  • I think it's unique to each baby, preemie especially.  Mine was a 35 wk IUGR baby, who is SGA.  He was 3 lbs 12 ozs, and now at 7 months (almost 6 mos adjusted) is breaking the scales at 13 lbs ha.  So, he's still a tiny peanut.  He's not even on the growth chart yet - he has his own curve that the Dr plots him on. The Drs all agree that, had he been full term, he was never going to be a big baby.  DH and I were both around 6.5 lbs.

So, I think some preemies, especially ones that aren't IUGR, catch up more quickly.  In general, I think the growth rate slows down a lot around 3 or 4 months. I think LO has gained about 1lb per month since 4 months (vs about 2 lbs per month up until that point).

  • I think it depends on the LO some. My son gained and grew really tall quickly until he was about 1yr to 1yr and half. I think he is going to just be tall though. He was big for a preemie too. It was a blessing though. Good luck!

  • I think they're supposed to gain about .5 pounds each week during the last trimester and for the first few months after birth so your LO sounds right on track. I think my LO slowed to .25 lbs around a month old (was a 36 weeker so this was around her due date.)

ETA- she's probably just following her natural growth curve and is a bigger baby. My LO takes after me and is barely on the charts, just like I was.
