So I feel like I am always behind on this whole "starting solids" thing DS is still nursing as his primary intake of food. At about 5 1/2 months he tried rice cereal, and has been generally getting one serving of that a day around lunchtime. I started him a few weeks ago on some solids (Stage 1 fruits and veggies), which he's also getting one of those a day. He does seem to love it, and seems eager to eat.
So my question is - what are you feeding your little one around the same age and what times of day are you offering solids? I bought some oatmeal while I will have him try soon. Have you tried things like puffs (I find myself petrified of choking, but I suppose I will get over that) or other things? Should I be moving to Stage 2 foods soon?
I totally do not remember what we did with DD at all.
Would love your suggestions.
Re: What are you feeding your 6-7 month old, and when?
We did baby led weaning ......
So we first introduced solids at 6.5 months. I'd mash up bananas, avocado, give him pieces of soft fruit like watermelon, peaches, etc. I also steamed veggies and either mashed them or just gave them to him to gnaw on. We just progressed as he seemed ready, which was kind of slow--he was a gagger so he preferred things to be blended somewhat for a while. I've never really given him anything different than what we were eating or had around the house and that is still the same today--he eats what we eat.
We started off just offering foods once/day and then progressed to twice a day and it was always after he'd nursed. Remember that breastmilk or formula should be their primary source of nutrition for the first year of life. My son's intake of food didn't start to affect (decrease) his intake of BM in the least til about 11 months old. We didn't go to 3 meals/day til after he was a year old.
Puffs are great b/c they dissolve in saliva. Limits the potential choking hazard. Same with yogurt melts, though I think we waited until just after 7 months for those.
DS gets solids an hour after he nurses. He has breakfast (oatmeal with breast milk) around 8 a.m., lunch around noon, and then dinner around five. For lunch and dinner, we have given him avocado, banana, pear, apple, blueberries, bell pepper spears (he just sucks on these), sweet potato bites, toast, squash/zucchini, pasta, bits of chicken (shredded), peas, greenbeans, cheese (shredded)...we even let him gnaw on a rib bone from Rudy's. He loved it.
At this age, all food is just for practice, so don't get too stressed about the amount he eats (or doesn't). Our pedi told us to go to three meals a day at six months, but keep in mind that "meals" just means that we're offering him solid food three times a day and he can eat whatever he wants. It just gives him more opportunities to practice.

Have fun!
sounds like you are on track! my dd gets breastfed in the morning. then at daycare (or home on the weekends) she gets some combination of cereal/yogurt/fruit puree (banana, pears so far). then a bottle. then a vegetable puree for lunch (orange and green veggies so far). then another bottle. and then breastfed before bedtime.
i've been trying to give her puffs but she doesn't exactly get the grasp concept yet. i let her gnaw on a string cheese and a sweet potato fry so we can move toward foods in addition to purees.
i'm still using stage 1 fruit and veggies- i think the 2 are just bigger, so i figure i'll switch to that when she finishes a 1 and is still hungry/having to open 2 purees for a single feeding.
We started DS on solids around 5 months. he was just ready and immediately took to eating.
right now he gets purees twice a day at school. sometimes only once on the weekends because we get busy. i bf him before school then he gets fruit/oatmeal for breakfast at school. he gets 3 bottles at school with a veggie/oatmeal mix in the afternoon. sometimes if he's not too tired he'll get another veggie or avocado or mashed up veggie that we are eating at dinner time.
we use both 1s and 2s. 2s are just bigger.
