Back-wearing with Moby?

I was wondering if anyone has used a Moby to back carry? My daughter is 8 months old and is getting pretty heavy when I wear her in the front. I also have an Infantino carrier that I can use to back carry but I like the Moby more and so does she. I found a tutorial online for the Moby but it looks like I would need help to do it.

I was just wondering if anyone has successfully used a Moby this way or should I just buy a different wrap-style carrier?

Re: Back-wearing with Moby?

  • Although it was shown in some earlier brochures, it has been widely agreed that it is not safe to use stretchy wraps like the Moby for back carries.  There is just too much danger of the child flipping out of the carry.

I would recommend a woven wrap or a structured carrier for back carries.

    Good luck!

TBW has an awesome FSOT forum. And if you want just a good description of the various types (it can be overwhelming), check out the babywearing guide in NCBelle's siggy. (Or actually, here - https://www.becomingmamas.com/babywearing/wraps/ ).

     Awesome :) Thank you!

  • I've been experimenting with it, but share the concerns mentioned above about him flipping out. There are some youtube videos that show different options for strapping LO in so you can see what's involved. I find them difficult to tie correctly - so even if they are safe, they take some practice.

I am not in the market to buy a new wrap because I've got a kid carrier backpack coming soon (Osprey is coming out with one this year). If I were buying a new BW accessory, I'd probably get the Ergo.

Yeah, there's just no way to tie it that it's truly safe in a back carry.  With a woven wrap, you don't get that stretch that allows kiddo to lean out so back carries are safe.  But the moby is so stretchy and lacks unhemmed rails - a bigger baby especially is going to have no trouble flipping right out of that sucker!

  • This video (done by an experience babywearer for information-sharing purposes) shows the difference between a back carry with a stretchy wrap and a back carry with a woven wrap.

You can see how stretchy wraps don't offer enough support to keep a LO safe.
