Two Under 2

Vacationing with 2u2

Ok we're going to Key West in a few weeks and will be traveling with a 21 month old and a 10 week old.  We are flying.  I traveled with DD when she was little but are we crazy for doing it with 2.  What all do we need to bring??  We will be there for one week.  We aren't renting a car - will be taking a cab to/from the hotel.

  • Do you have to take both kids? Honestly I'd try to see if your parents or IL are able to keep the older one at least. Toddlers are no fun in a hotel room. I took both of my kids on a beach vacation over the summer and to make a long story short, I did not get to eat a meal the entire time I was there, I didn't get to swim for even five minutes, my oldest would barely sleep, and we did not have any fun at all.

  • Unfortunately no - we have to take both kiddos.  My in-laws are older (in their 70s & 80s) and I would never leave either of our kids alone with them.  My dad lives in another state so that's a no-go.  Plus we want to take them with us.

I'm hoping its not a bad experience!  My 20 month old loves being outside and loves the water, so hopefully she'll have fun at the beach or hotel pool.

I was more wondering what stuff to bring - carseats, pack n plays, toys, etc.

  • Most hotels have pnp's, so check w/the hotel and reserve them in advance if you can. I prefer to bring my own sheets/blankets for the kids though. I'd look into renting carseats.

  • I last summer I took all 5 to DE by myself (we drove LO was about 7 weeks old).  As PP said most hotels have PNP for the kids to sleep in.  I'd bring plenty of toys to occupy them while you are in the hotel room, and a stroller and carrier (or double stroller) to cart them around it.  For the plan bring plenty of snacks, an iPad or cell phone with games usually keeps my toddler quiet for a while, and try your best to get LO to sleep during the flight. GL!

  • We leave tomorrow on what will be our 4th trip with both kiddos. We have had great experiences every time we've traveled so far (and one was even an 8 hr flight and 4 hr time change!). I'd check with the hotel to see if they have pnp's, and if they don't, you may want to consider renting them (google baby equipment for traveling). For our trip this week we rented 2 pnp's, a booster high chair, and a basket of toys so that we wouldn't have to bring them. The cost of renting all of that is still less than paying to check that amount of luggage. Also, every time we travel we put at least one of the kids in the bathroom to sleep in the pnp(if you don't have an extra bedroom) so that we know they will get uninterrupted sleep. Also, bring some white noise! Have fun - we love traveling with our boys!
