I just had my 6 week PP appointment with my OBGYN. I just had my first child and things are wonderful. I am not going to go back on BC and DH and I won't be preventing pregnancy at all. I know there is no way to tell when I am ovulating until AF returns. My OBGYN mentioned that I would have to supplement with formula should I become pregnant while BF. Is this always true? I would rather EBF for the first year but would also like to get preggers again before then. Can herbal supplements to increase production counteract this?
Re: BF Question
No this is not true.
when/if you get pregnant your milk supply might go down if you nurse through it, it will build back up.

I got pregnant with my daughter when my son was 4 months (hadn't started my period yet so she was a real surprise!). My son lost interest in breastfeeding around that time. The pediatrician said it was probably in part because we had started him on solid food and in part because pregnancy hormones can effect the taste of breastmilk. She said some babies don't seem to mind it but others don't like it. We ended up doing 1/2 breast milk 1/2 formula until I stopped pumping at 8 months. Good luck with everything!

I tell moms to be prepared. Some moms dry up, some have babies that hate the taste and others can tandem nurse two kids at once...so its different for all.
I got pg when DS was 10 months and it was HARD keep my supply up, I was sick everyday for 16 wks and couldnt eat/drink enough. You have to really add extra calories and drink more water than just being pregnant a lone.
I specifically waited until DD was over 1 so I could TTC again for #3, I didnt want to nurse while pg again. Im glad I did, but it was hard.
If you get pg I would just nurse a lot, dont start solids til at least 6 months or later so you have a good established milk supply. Try not to use pacifiers since confort nursing helps keep your supply up. You wont know until you are there, but its possible. Adventures in Tandem nursing by hilary flowers is a good book to read (talks about nursing while pg too).
