We love the name Lucy for a girl (I am only five weeks along...could be a boy, but can't even think about boy names yet...) but I really only like it as a nickname, not a formal name. I know it's generally short for Lucille or Lucia, but I'm not crazy about those. I was thinking of using it as a nickname for Louisa or Eloise. Thoughts? Any other ideas?
Re: What can Lucy be a nickname for?
Lucinda
Lucine
Lucia
Lucasta
Lucetta
Lucretia
I agree, Lucy is a great name just on it's own. But I also like "longer" forms such as Lucille. You've got a winner either way.
Also a July 2013 Mom!
This. I love it! trying to bring DH around.
I think because it ends in a "y" it feels nickname-y to me, like Abby or Maddy or something. I love the name, I just don't know that it's formal enough for me. But it seems to flow with our other DD, Leah, so....maybe I should sleep on it.
Love this name!
Lucille, Lucilia, Lucia, Lucienne, Luciana, Lucasta, Lucretia, Lucinda, Lucina...
We have a Lucia prn loo-SEE-ah and I love it more now that she's actually here. We call her Lucy or Lulu sometimes.
This. I don't understand why people pick a name based on what the nn will be. Why not just name the kid what you're going to call him/her? If you like the name Lucy and you're going to call her Lucy, just name her Lucy.
Also, I wasn't trying to be a jerk. Lucy is a beautiful name.
ETA: I just saw your response that you feel like names ending in y are nickname-ish. I get that, but Lucy is different than Maddy. Maddy is generally a nickname for Madison or Madeline. I think with Lucy, most people would assume it's her name, not a nn (if that's what you're worried about). ?? Or that is just what I would assume. I'm weird though. lol.
