I broke down and bought it new from Amazon; looks like I have some reading to do this weekend. We normally don't have issues getting him to go to sleep for the night, but for some reason I swear he recognizes when it's a weekend and stays up late! He almost rang in the new year with us this year! Plus, I'd love it if he'd nap in his crib for longer than 25 minutes, or if he'd take a nap without being rocked in general! And, STTN would be a nice little bonus too!
Re: Finally bought the Ferber book
We've been frustrated because K's been a butt about going to sleep through the week.... But on the weekend she goes right down and sleeps through the night. Are ya kidding me? The time where I can get up and go back to sleep is when you STTN!? =P Last night I booted DH out of the room because I think he's the root of the problem when I put her to bed...
Ah, 60-90 minutes sounds amazing! He'll sometimes take super long naps in his swing, but I can't rely on the swing for naps!
I am planning to buy this book, but could you summarize for me how you made this happen? That is our problem
Honestly I did nothing other than follow the book. Prior to it, I would bounce her for every nap and put her down only once she was asleep in my arms for 10 min. Once I read the book, I now put her down awake for her naps and she soothes herself to sleep. I still get the random 30 min nap here or there, but for the most part she is sleeping longer stretches during the day all on her own.
We've lengthened naps too! She used to wake up at 30 minutes on the dot. I started letting her fuss it out (this was after we had already done full out ferber at night to get her to go back to sleep on her own), and she started falling right back to sleep within 1-2 minutes of waking up during the nap, and then she'll sleep for another 30-60 minutes!
I think having done it at night kind of helped her learn "I'm in my crib, I'm awake, but still sleepy, I am safe to fall back asleep!"
That's a good way to think about it! Thanks!
From what I've read from others, I'm glad I didn't buy the book. We've always laid her down for naps awake and let her go to sleep by soothing herself.
Now, in the evenings I don't really follow that same routine, but she typically goes to sleep laying next to me in bed and then DH moves her when he comes to bed and she stays asleep until around 3 or 4 AM when she gets hungry. I don't mind because she's had weight gain issues....so I don't know that she's really ready to STTN.
Yeah, if Ty had weight gain issues I'd definitely be cool with him waking to eat. Considering he gets PLENTY of food (between 35-40 oz a day lately) that's not the case. Kid wasn't even 7# at birth and was 8 at his 2 week!
I use Ferber method and I still feed him at 4 some nights. He says it's usually not necessary at this age, but if you want to keep one feeding, you can. But it sounds like you've got a good routine right now, I had to start sleep training when he started to wake up 5 times a night again! 1 time I can totally handle.
