Ok, So I've been trying for months to get Reagan's GI (over the phone so I'm speaking with nurses) to switch her from compounded liquid Prevacid to Prevacid SoluTabs. They keep giving me the excuse that they are back ordered, blah blah. Well, now Reagan is spitting her liquid out (or motor boating her lips). I also have to get it filled EVERY WEEK and it's getting old. Not to mention, she's still having reflux issues.
For those whose litte ones are taking the SoluTabs, are you having any trouble getting it? She said that it would be inaccurate to split it into 1/4ths. So, I suggested that maybe we could do 15mg once a day instead. She then proceeded to tell me that I can try it with the liquid she has. I was quick to point out that, if she barely will swallow her liquid at 2.5mls, how am I going to get her to take double that? Seriously.
My question is...if your LO is on it, do they take 15mg once a day? Or how is it dosed? Were they on the liquid prior to the SoluTabs? If so, did you notice an improvement after starting the SoluTabs. I think it will be easier to just stick it in her cheek when she's sleeping or something. Or put it in a tiny bit of applesauce or something. Any advice would be appreciated!
Re: For those whose little ones are on Prevacid SoluTabs.
DS was on both - he was on the compounded for probably 6 - 8 months (starting in the NICU). We mixed that in his bottles, and he took it fine.
Then, we switched to the solutabs for about another 4 or 5 months. He was on a pretty low dose - only 1/2 a solutab a day. We dissolved it in a small syringe, and just squirted it into the corner of his mouth. He never had problems with it that way, so I'm not sure about your thoughts on just putting the tab in her mouth. I think I'd try to dissolve it, and then add it to a small bit of food.
Good luck, and I hope the switch helps. It must be very frustrating for her to be spitting the medicine out.
I didn't notice a difference, but I think he was outgrowing his reflux by the time we switched over. We weaned off it at about 15 months, but hadn't increased the dose in almost 6 months before that (and he grew quite a bit in that time).
I only disolved it in a few mls of water - so it probably will be less than what she is getting now.
From what I've learned, the problem is that something happened to the generic version so now there is a lot more demand for actual Prevacid. We've had to pay more because of switching from generic but there hasn't been any trouble getting the prescription filled.
FWIW-we disolve it in a syringe and then feed it to her by giving her a nipple from her bottle and putting the medicine in the nipple. Have you tried that with the liquid? It makes it harder to spit out.
Good luck!
Our precious girl, born at 27 weeks.
I'm already paying $10 every week for her compounded Prevacid. (I think the pharmacy is screwing something up) So, I'm sure the price would be comparable. If we can get the 30mg, we can split them anyway and it will last longer. That's what I'm hoping anyway.
I have a hard enough time getting her to take actual formula from her bottle- much less something that tastes bad. I will try it and see but I doubt it will work.
Thanks for your help guys!
Hey,
We were on one 15mg tab, half twice a day. Once I tracked down any remaining 15mg tabs within a 50 mile radius (no joke), we switched to the 30mg quartered. Now, those are impossible to find too! I randomly found some at my Publix grocery store, but I cleaned them out. Now everyone I call just has the name brand, which is about $50-$100 a month after insurance.
They said that the generic isn't just backordered - it's on a production halt. In other words, the a*holes at Prevacid probably put a block on the generic manufacturer. They'll battle it out for three years in court, and then it'll be available again - super helpful ha.
If you can find a pharmacy with the 30s though, I would push your Dr to get the Rx. How is splitting 15's any more accurate than quartering 30s? They make pill cutters if you want to be really precise - and some pharmacies will even do it for you if you ask! Sounds like your Dr is just being kind of a jerk.
Oh, and as for how we give the solutab - we squirt a little water inside his check, pop the tab in there, let him gum it, then give a few more squirts of water so he swallows it all. My husband got frustrated trying to dissolve it and suck it up into the syringe, so he started doing it this way when LO was just a few months old. Scared the bejeezus out of me at first, but it's really easy and my Dr said it's not a choking hazard bc they dissolve so quickly.
GL!
