January 2012 Moms

A bit overwhelmed :(

So in addition to the anxiety of giving birth and having a newborn in the next few weeks, our 1 year old chocolate lab has to have a $3500 surgery on her knee this week to fix a torn ligament. I'm not sure if the hormones are making it worse but I start crying every time I think of her being in pain and having to go through such a long recovery. She is going to be so depressed.... 6 weeks of completely restricted activity (only allowed to go outside on a leash to do her business) and three months of down time with no playdates, dog park, beach, etc.

In a way its good timing since I am on maternity leave and will be able to take care of her. I'm hoping our LO arrives a little later then sooner now so I can get through the first week or two with her before the baby comes. I'm just starting to get overwhelmed by the thought of taking care of a newborn AND an injured dog. My husband won't be around as much as we thought since he needs to get an additional part-time job to pay the extra bills while I am on leave....which means I will need to take care of more of the household stuff too. Not sure how I am going to do it all :(

Re: A bit overwhelmed :(

  • I'm sorry, mama :( No words of wisdom, just sympathy and hugs!

I am most worried about taking care of our two dogs with a newborn, but thankfully DH and my mom will be around.

  • Oh poor puppy :-(  My two furbabies got valley fever over the summer and are meds for the indefinate futureand I was worked up enough about that.  Sorry to hear that but hopefully your dog has a speedy and ideal recovery.  My two hate doing business on a leash...hope you have a pal or someone you cannot enlist for assistance
  • I truly feel for you.  I was totally ready for LO to come until my little Scotty, Millie, wound up with a bacterial infection that cost us over $1500 in emergency care (we weren't sure if she would make it).  Now, I'm glad that LO decided to wait to arrive so that we have time to really focus on Millie's recovery.  I know that it's hard to watch your furbaby go through such an ordeal, but it is good that you will able to stay home with him in order make sure that he is recovering properly.  Think of it this way, you'll never have so much time at home with him than you will because of maternity leave.  Let's hope that his recovery goes smoothly and that he's back to his active self soon.

  • Poor Puppy! Just try to remind yourself that you are NOT Super Woman and accept any help that is offered.

    Good Luck and Many Blessings!

  • I feel so bad for you.  But I know the struggles with this kind of surgery.  My dog has had ligament surgery 3 times on 2 legs. Both of her back legs she had torn her CCL.  The surgery should only take a day and they keep them overnight.  Then they come home.  Hopefully they give you pain meds which kept my girl pretty sedate.  It is sad keeping them in the kennel but trust me it was the best place until they are able to be mobile.  If you have any questions about the surgery feel free to contact me as I have been through it a few times.  We like to call our dog the thousand dollar pound puppy.  She was the cheapest dog to take from the pound at 8 weeks old and has turned out to be the most expensive dog I know. But I would not trade her for the world!

  • Oh i'm sorry about your pup :( It's never easy to look at those sad puppy eyes. But one advice is to NOT let them see you sad or feel bad. That is when they get really sad about it all. If you act normal, they adjust very quickly. And don't worry about house work ;) When the baby sleeps, just cuddle up with the pup for a half hour. It will mean the world to you and the doggie. :) It's tough to manage it all but things work out. Just don't drive yourself crazy and try to do too much. If some things don't get done, oh well:)

  • You sound overwhelmed, take a deep breath. My dog had this same surgery when he was a year old(he's a big boxer mix) and his recovery was not as bad as I thought it would be. My vet told me that it is their natural instinct to want to be healed and better. The only major restriction is no stairs and jumping, but I'm positive that you'll be okay. Write reminders for the pain medication and just keep her comfortable! It will be okay and Good Luck!
  • That is sad! We have a 5 year old chocolate lab and he is like my baby. It's horrible when they're injured. He will be fine though. . .chocolate labs have a way of always being happy:) I'm sure he will enjoy having you home and being near you even if you're just sitting around.

Just another thought. . .If your dog is only 1 year old it might not be too late to get an inexpensive dog healthcare policy. Ours is through Pets Best and they have been really great with covering a lot of things and it's saved us thousands (pit bull attack, UTI, itchy skin, you name it. . .)

  • You poor thing and your poor pup.  This made me sad to read.  I really hope there are friends or neighbors that can help out during this time.

  • Thanks SO much for all your kind words! I am feeling a bit better this evening then I was this morning. I am lucky to live close to my family.....last night I was under the impression that it would be difficult for them to help out between their jobs and own dogs. However, my mom and grandma promised today to help out as much as possible and told me not to worry that I will have the help I will need. I had dinner with my girl friends tonight (last night out before puppy's surgery and probably before the baby is born) and they promised to do what they can as well. So now I am focusing on keeping a positive attitude for my puppy to help her feel less stressed and counting my blessings that I have a good support system and time off from work to take care of my baby and dog and give her the comfort she will need.
