Random question, a poll if you will - do you leave cabinets open?

Let's say you go in the kitchen and open the cabinet to grab a bag of chips. Do you leave the cabinet door wide open and then walk out of the kitchen, or do you close the cabinet door after you get out the bag of chips.

What about drawers. Say you are rooting through a drawer looking for a specific shirt. By the time you find it, the clothes are a jumbled mess with some hanging out over the edge. Do you leave the drawer open as is with clothes hanging out or do you put the clothes back in all the way and close the drawer completely.

Please humor me and answer this poll :)

  • The first doesn't apply, as I don't eat chips.

    jk. lol

In this house, if you open it or see it open, then you close it.

Does this have anything to do with your teen?

  • No! That would drive me crazy.
  • Cabinets I close, drawers I do not.  If you looked in my room I bet every single one of my drawers is open a little bit.

But, I put DHs clothes away and I know he doesn't like drawers open so I make sure his are always closed.

  • When DH and I first started dating, I would go into the kitchen in his apartment, and every single cabinet door would be open.  Drove me freaking crazy.  I always close them.  It also drives me nuts when he pulls something out of a drawer, and the edge of a piece of clothing sticks out after he closes it.  Obviously not a deal breaker, and there are worse things in the world, but I don't like it.

  • I am really, really bad about closing kitchen cabinets.  It used to annoy me when I'd walk into the kitchen and random cabinets would be standing open, but I've realized it's always ME who leaves them open.  So, now I try to check the kitchen before I leave and close them all.  I guess in the rush of getting meals together, I don't think about it.  I need to change my ways, so, uh, thanks for addressing this issue.

LOL No. This is actually another adult that I heard was doing this. A woman actually. My cw was complaining about his wife and I was shocked that any woman could leave cabinets and drawers just hanging open like that.

  • I close them.  Dh will leave them open and it drives me NUTS!  I have walked in and there will be 3-4 of them opened.  If the fridge didnt close on its own Im sure it would be open as well.  He does close the drawers though.

  • I honestly can't fathom why you'd leave any of these open.  I really can't.  I will occaionally leave my closet door open, but that's about it.

You open, get what you need, then close.  How much effort does it take to close a cabinet or drawer when you're done with it?

  • Now I'm starting to wonder if I am weird! LOL I never leave anything open. Not cabinets, not drawers, not closet doors, not the dryer/washer or dishwasher.......I would seriously go batty if that stuff was left open. Heck, I even close all of the bedroom doors. I can honestly say that the only door left open in my house on a regular basis is the bathroom, and that's only because the cat box is in there.

  • I close them. I remember getting yelled by my mom for this when I was younger. I never understood why it bothered her so much. Now it drives me crazy. I am constantly telling DD to close her drawers and armoire.

This this this! DH is constantly leaving the pantry doors open, and with them open, you can't walk through to get to the garbage can. Drives me nuts. I tend to shut them perhaps a little too forcefully as I walk by as a gentle reminder.

  • Our washer door and soap tray stay open all the time when not in use. We have a front load and keeping it open helps it dry out and prevents mold/stink issues. It drives me crazy when someone CLOSES it :)

I do it constantly. It's really not out of laziness -- it's like my mind just completely spaces on closing them. I've been doing it since I was a kid, and it drove my mom nuts, and now it drives my DH nuts. I try to make a conscious effort to remember to close them, but what usually happens is that I'll walk into the kitchen and see that I left every single one open and will then close them at once.

  • I do and it drives DH insane so I try not to do it when he is here.  I can just see it irritates him - he doesn't (or rarely) say anything.  But when he's not here I leave it open just cos I can.

  • I'm good about kitchen drawers but am bad about dresser drawers and am REALLY bad about kitchen cabinets. I have no idea why. I don't mean to do it. Drives H insane.
  • Never.  But DH does all the time (with the drawers in the bedroom).  I can't stand seeing cabinets open.  My cabinets and closets and drawers are not organized very well and the thought of anyone else seeing them look like that makes me batty.  When they are closed, everything looks much better.  :-)

  • I hate having cabinets or drawers open, although I must admit that I'm getting so absentminded that I do leave cabinets open behind myself at times. As soon as I notice I've done it I close them and feel annoyed at myself for leaving them open in the first place. I never leave drawers open, though.

DH is pretty good about it. He does leave them open sometimes, but usually closes them.

  • I sometimes do. I cannot explain why - it's not something that's deliberate. I think it's an issue of getting distracted while I'm in the middle of getting stuff out or putting it away, so I look away for a second and then forget about it.  That's for kitchen cabinets.  Kitchen drawers I do shut right away.  Bedroom dresser drawers - they are always overflowing and frequently left opened because I don't care. :)
  • I will not leave a cabinet open, I feel like I am always going behind DH and closing the cabinets.  As for the drawer, I push it as far as it will go and leave the clothes hanging out:)
  • I tend to leave the spice cabinet open the most as I am in and out of it a lot when cooking. I always forget to close it before I sit down for dinner. I close everything else all of the time though.

  • Not intentionally, but yes, I do it a lot.  Sometimes I close them, sometimes I only do it halfway, other times, they are completely open.  I think it's my ADD and my mind has already moved on to the next task and I've forgotten about the door(s).  I can empty the dishwasher and at the end have 7 doors open or be in the middle of cooking and have several open.  My mind is just somewhere else.  Once I step back and see any doors open though, they get closed right away.  I hate seeing them open.

  • If I'm in the middle of cooking and I'm going to be accessing the same cabinet over and over, I will leave it open. I close everything up when I'm putting it all away, though. The sounds of cabinets closing drives me insane, for some reason. I always close drawers.

  • I close them.

There is actually a joke that goes around through a group of our friends. We had 2 friends over when I was pregnant for the twins and we were chatting in the kitchen. DH opened the glass cabinet and took out a glass and left the cabinet open and started pouring a drink. I'm in the middle of a sentence when I freaked out and yelled, "Shut the cabinet!" and slammed it shut.

It's still talked about almost 5 years later! LOL

  • I leave the cupboards open all the time. I'm trying to be better about this, but it's a life long habit. I often leave the drawers open, too, because they are old and sticky, it takes two hands to close them.

My dresser is brand new and the drawers close easily, so I usually shove my clothes back in and close them. Usually....

  • No and it drives me nuts.  My DH will get something out of a cabinet in the kitchen and then walk away without closing it.  He says he is using it and putting it back.  Drives me nuts as it can be hours before he puts it back.  What drives me the most nuts is the closet in our room.  The doors don't close well but I still have them pushed closed, I just think it looks better and we have a small room so having them open just seems to make the room smaller - he always leaves them open.  Must be a man thing as my step-dad is always leaving the cabinets open as well.

  • Everything must be closed (cabinet doors, drawers) and I cannot stand a messy, jumbled up drawer or closet. DH haphazardly puts his shiiit away and it drives me BSC.

I don't understand why people would leave cabinet doors and drawers open, but then it would never ever ever occur to me to do that.
