Austin Babies

Sorry PW, anyone have a Pikkolo carrier?

I'm researching stuff to register for and definitely want a carrier.  I'm going to register for a moby and then want something for when baby is a little older.  I saw that the Pikkolo came highly recommended in Baby Bargains but I really can't find too many reviews on it, nor have I heard of it before.  My other choice would be the Beco Gemini which seems to be really similar and has lots of good reviews.  Just wondering about any personal experience with the Pikkolo.  Thanks!!!

  • I almost ordered one, but since it wasn't local, I was worried if it didn't fit, how easy it would be to return.

I've tried one out at a babywearer meeting and it was comfy to me.

  • I have one. A plain black one. I went through the little comparison chart on Carrymeaway.com (where I bought it) and went between the Beco and the Pikkolo before deciding on the Pikkolo for a few reasons. I like it fine-have no complaints. But I will add I did purchase an Ergo, as well, and mainly use it.

Why do you use the Ergo more?  More comfy?  I know it gets good reviews as well but I was a little hesitant b/c they can't face out like they can with the Beco and Pikkolo.

  • I would definitely try before you buy. I know for sure that although the Gemini does face outward, in order to get the hips positioned right, the carrier goes really high up. I know for some who are shorter, it's almost impossible to see over it. I have a normal beco and an ergo and i always use the ergo. It's comfortable, user friendly and babies love it and it's especially useful for the back carry!
  • Honestly, I tried wearing H faceout a few times but I did not like that he could grab stuff and that I was nearly hitting his head so often. I much preferred a back carry. He can still see everything, but not so easy to knock stuff off the shelves or hitting his head.

Plus the hip positions where hard. I'm short and short torso so that might be a problem limited to me.

ETA: The pikkolo does do a hip carry which was one thing I was looking forward to, but again, I didn't get one. But a friend out here loves it and says the hip carry is super comfy too.

  • one of my good friends has the pikkolo and loves it. she ordered it.

i have a boba g2 and we can STILL use it! https://www.bobafamily.com/

  • I'm pretty sure we still have a Pikkolo in the babywearer's lending library, but the other leader has the library this time so I can't physically check right now.  Lots of members love the Gemini and usually bring theirs to the meetings, so if you wanted to come to one I'm sure someone would let you try theirs out.

  • I had an Ergo with my first and liked it, but wanted the forward facing option with my second and so I got a Pikkolo.  I love it.  I find the carry to be VERY similar to the Ergo in terms of how it feels.  The other nice thing about the Pikkolo is that the straps adjust really easily, which is nice because my very tall DH uses it as well and it is easy to switch back and forth between the two of us.  Big thumbs up.

Well, I will first say that I keep the Pikkolo in my car just in case I need it, but I haven't used it since DD was pretty young. DD was really little when she was born and the PIkkolo swallowed her. I ended up borrowing my sister's Baby Bjorn for awhile because it was smaller. I went to the PIkkolo after that for awhile.

In answer to your question, the thing about the Ergo I like is the really wide hip band. Other than that, they're practically the same, in my opinion. I initially bought the Pikkolo because of the forward facing ability. However, I am really short and petite and after carrying her inward facing when she was young, I realized that carrying her forward facing when she was bigger would probably really throw off my center of gravity too much and I would be prone to falling forward, so I never did put her forward facing. Even at 21 months, I still wear her inward facing on occasion, especially in airports or if we're around a lot of people and I want to keep her close. Otherwise, we do a back carry.

  • I love my Gemini. I don't use it much anymore, but, when DD was younger, the only way she liked to be worn was forward facing and I used it all the time. At first we had her in a Bjorn, but that started killing my back, so I bought a Gemini. Now that she is older and bigger, I don't think forward facing would work well because it kind-of pitches her at a weird angle, but I still use it for the hip carry once in a while.
