Safe to eat fish while pregnant?

Hello, I bought salmon couple of weeks ago and the person from fish department told me to get the farm raised. I had read that wild Alaskan was good but he told me it is the opposite, farmed has less mercury. I'm not sure if that's true....

How much fish can you eat? I bought tilapia (7 fillets for my husband and I). Can I eat one or two? Please help. Thanks :-)

  • I eat a TON of fish - it's one of the few proteins I can stomach.

Just make sure you avoid the high mercury ones like tuna, swordfish, king mackeral, etc and you are fine.

    FWIW, I even eat sushi.

    Surprise  You horrible, horrible mother!!!!!!!

OP- You do want to eat the high mercury fishes in moderation, but I allowed myself a tuna sandwich once (ok, ok twice) a week when I was PG with the girls (with chopped green olives on top...mmmmmmm) because it was one of my biggest cravings.

But tilapia, haddock, etc.  are all really good for you and high in Omega 3, which is good for the baby(s).  Isn't that a third tri food group from Dr Luke's book?

  • I ate a fish sandwich Friday, three sushi rolls on Saturday, then yesterday I ate a can of tuna and a plate of mussels (washed down with half a glass of merlot), and today I ate a shrimp penne dish. Highly scandalous.  My doctor wasn't worried when he asked me about my eating habits today :)

  • Don't buy farmed salmon!! EVER~~~~! I live north of Seattle and know lots of people who fish for salmon. Wild salmon is MUCH better for you!

I completely agree with this. I live in a fishing town, so I am admittedly a fish snob, but fish are their environment. Farmed fish eat, drink, and breath their own waste, and it definitely affects the quality and flavor of the meat. It's much better to get wild caught fish, and salmon is an excellent pregnancy choice.
