Preemies

Preemie Daycare Question/Introduction

I've been checking out this board for a bit now, but I wanted to actually introduce myself and pose a question.  My son was born October 29th at 33weeks and 5 days.  He spent just over two weeks in the NICU and has been home since with no major issues (lactose issues, but in the scheme of things it all could be much worse).  In two weeks he is going off to daycare coinciding with my return to work.  Has anyone else sent their preemie to daycare?  Did you tell the provider anything special?  Just trying to get him and us prepared for the big day.....also if so, what does your little one wear to daycare?  Right now he typically just hangs out in sleep and play footed outfits.

Re: Preemie Daycare Question/Introduction

  • Congratulations on the birth of your son!  C started daycare when she was 10 months actual 7 months adjusted.  I put together an "All about Channing" handout.  I just listed all the things she was doing, eating, her likes and dislikes, I gave some background on her prematurity and what we do to try to keep her healthy and not over stimulated.  I gave this to all the teachers in her room.

The clothing thing was a big adjustment for us too.  She has to wear actual outfits with socks and shoes to school.  So I had to go buy her some play clothes.  I just went to target and bought her a bunch of stuff that I didn't care if it got ruined.

  • DD starts daycare in march - she will be one year old (8months adjusted) and We were very lucky that the DC we found just so happens to be run by a former NICU nurse and they always have a nurse on staff in the infant room so I feel really comfortable with them and any issues DD might have or any special care for preemies she might need.  We are also doing an "all about Madison" print out where I will list her feeding schedule, medicine schedule and PT/OT goals/focuses so I hope the providers find it helpful. I also plan on going to get her more play clothes for daycare as well as an inexpensive diaper bag to pack for her 'cubby'

  • My daughter started daycare at 12 weeks actual age (2 weeks adjusted), also coinciding with the end of my maternity leave. She is in a home daycare so I took her over one evening the week before she started and went over eveything with the provider. I also wrote everything down, (what she liked, how often she ate/slept). It has been going well. I always keep her up to date on whatever the pediatrician/neonatologists have told us at our most recent appointment.

I have always put her in 2 layers (a onesie beneath whatever outfit or sleep & play she is wearing) and have continued to do that. She has a thin, fleece, hoodie coat that she wears now that it is cold out, and I have a fleece carseat cover so she doesn't get cold.

  • Congratulations on the birth of your son. I guess I was lucky in sense that DH got laid off right before I went back to work and was out of work for 5 months before DD went off to daycare. By then she was 8 months old and it was the summer time. I didn't really worry about germs to much. But my now 2 year old is in daycare and I basically told DCP that even though she may not be a preemie per say, she still has a crappy immune system and she tends to get sick very easily.

Obviously they need to know about his lactose issues, if your bringing his bottles/milk etc, maybe you could tell how you manage his feeds. What kind of place will he be attending? Center or small in-home? As for outfits I would say whatever is the easiest.

  • My LO started DC at 7 months actual 5 adjusted.  So, he's been there almost a month now.

Daycare had a bunch of paperwork to fill out and it definitely included enough questions about him.  Otherwise I would have done an "about Gabe" sheet.

Gabe wears footed sleepers to day care.  Daycare thinks it is weird that I send him in "pjs" but he is a BABY and babies don't get "dressed up for the day".  LOL!  He is happiest and most comfortable in them, so that is what I send him in.
