Scared DD will hurt herself in crib

DD has been sleeping in her Rock n Play since she was born due to reflux and she just loves it and hates the crib. Well, I finally decided to start the crib transition and I'm seriously terrified she is going to hurt herself. We have it on the lowest setting since she's pulling herself up to stand in there but then suddenly she will just let go and fall down into the crib. I'm scared she is going to fall and bonk her head really hard against the crib rails in the night. Am I just being overly paranoid? Obviously babies pull themselves up all the time but she throws herself backwards so hard that I'm worried!

Re: Scared DD will hurt herself in crib

  • Maybe you could put a bumper just on the back part of the crib?

  • Put the bumper in. I have always used the bumper and never had an issue. If she is pulling herself up, she's not going to get stuck in the bumper.

  • Judah's crib has bumpers but he still hits his head when he is yelling for me in the mornings.

  • I have the bumpers in but it doesn't seem like it will protect her head if she throws herself back- they are too low. She almost hit her head earlier but missed by a tiny bit... I think I'm also just nervous since she has always slept in our room so I'm so worried :-(

  • All I will say is that what you're worried could happen...is an absolute possibility. And that I'm not sure what a solution would be...

I'm sorry, I don't want to scare you. Just today I caught DD on her way down and >< that close to banging her head....hard. I'm not sure how to avoid it, she bed shares with us quite a bit so we will just do that for right now. I'm thinking once they get better control of themselves they will be a little more careful?

  • I know it sounds kinda harsh but after a few times of falling completely back I think they learn to fall on their butt. When X first pulling himself up he would just let himself fall back and sometimes I just wasn't fast enough to catch him. Eventually he learned to fall on his butt rather than falling on his back.

    Don't worry mama! She'll be ok ;)

  • You would be surprised how much babies can take. She might fall and bump her head, but it's unlikely in the extreme that she'll hurt herself - it will surprise her more than anything. After it happens once or twice she'll figure out a better way to get down.

  • I don't see how bumpers would help if she flew back from standing, if anything at this age they become a hazard because they can use them to stand on to try to climb out of the crib.

Like the others said, it's unlikely she'll be able to do any serious damage, and if she does bang her head once or twice she'll probably stop doing it.

  • C bonked his head a few times before he learned how to slide down to his butt. It sounds painful, but he would get over it pretty quick and he's fine. She'll be ok and I bet she'll figure out another way pretty quickly :)
